Throughout history, when managing architectural projects or calculating dimensions for household items, we always refer to the Hole Gauge and its numeric values. However, with the passage of time, various issues have arisen, leading to the presence of numerous Hole Gauges on the market with different explanations and meanings. This article aims to provide a clear understanding of this measuring tool to help you use it correctly.

According to Feng Shui, interior design and house construction should be based on the measurements on the Hole Gauge. This will help reduce negative aspects and attract more fortune to your family.
Currently, the market offers various gauges with different sizes and purposes. Typically, three common types are as follows:
- Gauge 520mm: measuring fluid spaces, for example, measuring main doors, windows, etc.
-Gauge 429mm: Measure the positive energy areas such as the kitchen, platform, staircase steps,...
-Gauge 390mm: Measure the negative energy areas like the bed, wardrobe, altar, tomb,...
Currently, there is a combined tape measure on the market integrating both 429mm and 390mm gauges, with the upper part being 429mm and the lower part being 390mm.
Typically, on the Hole Gauge, there are 4 rows: the first row measures in centimeters, the second and third rows indicate Hole Gauge numbers written in letters to help understand corresponding good and bad areas based on the measurements on the gauge. The fourth row (the top row) indicates measurements according to the size of people in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Fujian (China).
On the surface, to distinguish and avoid confusion between good and bad areas, red is used to signify good areas, and black indicates bad areas. Thus, you can easily choose a beautiful, Feng Shui-appropriate size based on this gauge.
However, with each meaning on the gauge, there are numerous good areas. So, which size is the most beautiful?
Some opinions suggest that significant architectural structures and items of good quality, such as entrances, bedrooms, furniture, etc., should choose auspicious directions, while inauspicious directions are reserved for areas with unfavorable positions like bathrooms, warehouses, etc. However, each location has different characteristics, and corresponding suitable gauge types, as discussed earlier, should be used accordingly.
With the gauges, which have been translated from Chinese to Vietnamese by researchers, they are relatively easy for us to understand. Therefore, there is no need for overly literal translation to avoid misunderstanding. For example, the Harmony Hexagram:
- Translated, it means six auspicious directions, including East, West, South, North, sky, and earth.
- In terms of terminology, it refers to pairs of directions that are harmonious with each other, applied to the Hole Gauge, indicating the harmony of the five elements Yin-Yang according to the 12 zodiac signs, corresponding to pairs such as Rat matches Ox, Tiger matches Pig, Rabbit matches Dog, Dragon matches Rooster, Snake matches Monkey, and Horse matches Goat.
From this, we can see that the compatibility of everything is related to the Yin-Yang of the five elements, and the Hole Gauge helps us apply this. With each number on the gauge, it cannot match all directions, so for each good number on the gauge, you should consider which one truly aligns with the suitable direction for your destiny.
Usually, we use a Hole Gauge that integrates 2 basic types, resulting in a total of 4 measurement numbers, including 2 types of numbers written in letters indicating auspicious and inauspicious directions.
-On the second row, counting from the top, are the characters on the 429mm gauge consisting of 8 characters corresponding to 4 auspicious and 4 inauspicious characters, specifically as follows:
