To visit Hà Khẩu, you need to go to Lào Cai first and then proceed with the departure procedures to cross over to Hà Khẩu. Instead of obtaining a visa for deep inland travel in China, to reach Hà Khẩu, you only need to apply for a travel permit.
To obtain a travel permit, you just need your ID card and 2 passport photos, paying a fee of around 300,000 VND. This is indeed a simple way to explore China. It's worth mentioning that you can also apply for a travel permit at two other border gates: Hữu Nghị Quan, bordering Lạng Sơn, and Móng Cái border gate, Quảng Ninh province.
