Hands-on review of the HJC RPHA 11 Carbon Nakri helmet
Buzz
HJC is a helmet brand originating from South Korea, established in 1971 with the slogan “#1 in the world”. HJC stands for “Hong Jin-Crown”. In Vietnam, HJC is a popular helmet brand known for its eye-catching designs (such as the Marvel series) and affordable prices. In this article, I'll be showcasing the RPHA 11 Carbon Nakri. Within HJC's product line, the RPHA1 stands at the top, catering to professional riders in MotoGP or WBSK, or those with high demands. Following closely is the RPHA 11, a premium full-face helmet. The RPHA 11 I have is the version with a carbon fiber outer shell. In addition to the helmet, the box also contains a tinted visor and a pinlock 120.The outer shell is crafted from carbon fiber, reducing the helmet's weight significantly and providing a comfortable fit. HJC has reinforced this carbon fiber layer for enhanced shock absorption. Personally, I find the carbon layer's finish to be of high quality. The ventilation slots and visor lock are made of plastic with satisfactory durability.According to HJC, the RPHA 11 meets or exceeds the ECE 22.05 standards. Testing includes energy dissipation, penetration resistance, and integrity of the chin strap structure. The helmet indicates a weight of 1,250 g, size L, and feels quite lightweight when held. Comparing it to my current Arai Astro-GX, the difference in weight between the two helmets is quite noticeable. The RPHA 11 undergoes testing in both the manufacturer's wind tunnel and real-world scenarios to ensure optimal performance. The visor can protect against up to 99% of UVA-B rays. It features slots for attaching tear-off strips, thin plastic pieces that riders can remove for improved visibility. HJC sells tear-offs separately. Inside the visor, there are pinlock pins for attaching pinlock inserts to prevent fogging.Right at the center front is the visor locking system. While some may prefer this positioning, I personally find it unsafe. Why? Because when reaching up to open or close the visor, our hand obstructs our vision. Even if just for a split second, it can lead to unforeseen consequences. The visor of the RPHA 11 can be adjusted in increments, which is convenient for controlling airflow. Its quick-release mechanism allows for swift and tool-free removal.Advanced antibacterial fabric material provides moisture-wicking and quick-drying functionality. The removable padding is suitable for eyeglass wearers.HJC incorporates aerodynamics and ventilation technologies from MotoGP racing into the design of the RPHA 11, ensuring breathability. While I haven't tested this helmet while riding, I'm certain its cooling performance doesn't match my Arai Astro GX. Hehe. Also, I find the ventilation slider on the top somewhat stiff to operate. It's a bit challenging to open and close this vent. It's best to keep it open; if it rains, then close it.The cheek pad can be quickly and safely removed in emergency situations. The Double D-ring is a standard fastening mechanism on helmets like this. The yellow-painted D-rings have different shapes, which can be inconvenient and uncomfortable to use.The area reserved for installing SMART HJC. SMART HJC is a Bluetooth communication system developed by HJC in collaboration with SENA specifically for the company's helmets. The helmet interior also provides space for installing earphones.ConclusionDespite the minor inconveniences mentioned, the HJC RPHA 11 is a lightweight, comfortable helmet with an accessible price point for a premium full-face helmet.
