Hands-on with Logitech MX Keys Mini: my style
MX Keys Mini is compact, sleek black-gray, and most importantly, typing on it is extremely satisfying, very smooth, and quieter than the Magic Keyboard I'm currently using. This Keys Mini version is neat because it doesn't have the numpad cluster, suitable for those who prefer a tidy and stylish workspace. I received this MX Keys Mini as a gift from Logitech, the official release is expected in a few weeks. Currently, the full-size MX Keys is already available on the market.Let me talk about the typing experience. My preference is for light typing, not too loud, and without needing much force. Also, the key travel shouldn't be too deep, as I need to type quickly and frequently within a short time. For this typing style, I find the black Magic Keyboard from Apple quite suitable and enjoyable. I've tried other non-mechanical keyboards, but none have been able to replace the Magic Keyboard.Trying out this MX Keys Mini is an absolute delight. The typing sensation and responsiveness even surpass that of the Magic Keyboard, making my experience peak right from the first keystroke. Moreover, perhaps due to the similarity in key size with the Magic Keyboard, I hardly needed any time to readjust to the layout. It's just seamless typing all the way, something I rarely encounter with other standalone keyboards I've tried. The sound of the MX Keys Mini is also less clacky, deeper, and gentler compared to the Magic Keyboard.
MX Keys Mini is also visually appealing, compact, and stylish with its black-gray color scheme. This keyboard also features backlighting. It's been a while since I last took notice, but it's nice and beautiful even though I don't personally use backlighting. Actually, my Magic Keyboard doesn't have backlighting, and I haven't paid attention to that detail for years 😁 Having backlighting just enhances the aesthetic of the keyboard. This backlighting feature is quite nifty. It lights up when my hand approaches and turns off when I move away, saving battery. The backlighting can also adjust automatically based on the environment or be manually set.MX Keys Mini can connect to 3 devices, and you can switch between them using shortcut keys on the keyboard. This is a feature that surpasses my Magic Keyboard, allowing me to swiftly switch between my Mac Mini, MacBook Pro, and iPad Pro without the hassle of searching for cables or re-pairing like with the Magic Keyboard. This feature is called Easy Switch. To use it for the first time (pairing mode), you need to press and hold the key of the device you want for 3 seconds. Once paired, switching between devices is as simple as a single touch. The compact size of MX Keys Mini makes it an ideal portable keyboard to take with you when traveling or moving between home and office while still using your familiar keyboard. It's not overly lightweight, but throwing it in a backpack is no issue, especially for those who appreciate the typing experience. I've seen some folks carry around bulky mechanical keyboards for coding, so this is quite common.MX Keys Mini is angled upwards, providing good wrist support while typing. The feel isn't much different from the Magic Keyboard I've been using for years, although the MX Keys Mini is slightly more elevated. However, there's no option to adjust the angle; the keyboard has a fixed tilt angle. Actually, when I type like this, it lights up, which is pretty cool.Logitech advertises that the keyboard's battery can last up to 10 days with backlighting on, and up to 5 months with backlighting off. I'll put this claim to the test myself. The official price for the genuine MX Keys Mini is around 2.59 million VND, but checking on Shopee, it's listed at 2.99 million VND, probably varies by seller. Since I'm not a heavy keyboard user, the 2.59 million VND price seems reasonable to me, but I'm unsure about the overall market. Notably, the Mini version is priced the same as the full-size version with a numpad. So, it mainly depends on personal preference. I'll revisit after using it extensively for 3-4 months and share my review.
