Introducing the iPad Air 5, the latest iPad Air unveiled by Apple just a few days ago. This time, the product doesn't undergo significant changes in design compared to the previous generation. It features the M1 chip, equivalent to the one in the iPad Pro 2021 or the MacBook Air M1, delivering the most powerful performance among iPad Air products to date. This product is aimed at users who prioritize performance when using a tablet, suitable for studying, working, and entertainment with heavy tasks. However, if you have high demands for touch experience, speed, screen quality, or rear camera, the iPad Air 5 still has many limitations compared to the iPad Pro.
Beautiful design, minimal changes
This time, the iPad Air 5 comes in a size that's just right for comfortable handling while enjoying entertainment content. The flat, seamlessly integrated rear panel is made from solid aluminum, providing a premium look and feel. Inside the box, it comes with a 20W USB-C power adapter and a C to C connecting cable.
I find this pink version to be charming, light, and softer than the pink of my MacBook Air, which I use extensively.
The rear panel features a 12MP camera lens, lacking the ultra-wide angle or Lidar sensor found on the iPad Pro. This camera is capable of recording 4K quality videos.
In the middle of the rear panel is the iconic Apple logo, and below it is the 'iPad Air' branding along with the Smart Connector, allowing the device to connect with accessories like the Magic Keyboard and Smart Keyboard.
At the top is the power button integrated with Touch ID and external speakers.
At the bottom edge, you'll find the USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 port with a data transfer speed of 10Gbps.
The device will only have two external speakers, however, Apple has added an additional faux speaker position on each side of the speaker, giving the illusion of 4 speakers 😁.Nothing remarkable about the display
The device will feature a 10.9-inch screen with thick bezels. As it's primarily geared towards entertainment, gaming, handheld viewing of video content, etc., I find the thick bezels to be a secure grip, preventing fingers from accidentally touching the display. Although the device isn't overly thick, weighing 461 grams makes it quite heavy to hold for extended periods. Therefore, thicker bezels provide a more secure grip.
The display is a Liquid Retina IPS LCD with a resolution of 1640x2360 and a brightness of 500 nits. It lacks a 120Hz refresh rate but supports True Tone mode. I find this display quality to be sufficient, nothing exceptional, not quite eye-catching up close.
I haven't seen the screen demonstrate sharpness of detail and color accuracy, especially when compared to displays on other Apple devices like the iPad Pro with mini-LED display. However, for basic web browsing experience, I find it still manages to show sufficient detail and brightness.
M1 Chip
Currently, the iPad Air 5 is equipped with the Apple M1 chip, which offers the best performance among Apple's iPad lineup, equivalent to the performance of a MacBook Air M1 and even the iPad Pro.
Most users of the MacBook Air line use the device for studying, work, and especially for gaming and entertainment due to its large yet not overly heavy screen. Therefore, now with the powerful performance from the Apple M1 chip, unlike the Bionic chip on previous iPad Air models, it will provide a smoother gaming experience, sufficient power for multitasking, video editing, creative effects, studying, etc.
The version I'm experiencing is running the iPadOS 15.4 operating system.
The iPad Air 5 comes in 2 memory versions: 64GB (the one I have) and 256GB, with a starting price of $599.
This will be the device available in various pastel colors, youthful and suitable for young users who enjoy entertainment and studying on a large screen with the best performance ever seen on iPad Air models.
