For those working from home, streamers, students, or teachers, take note that from now on, refer to Hangouts Meet, Google's online teaching software, as Google Meet. In a recent blog post, Google confirmed that Hangouts Meet is no longer part of the Hangouts product and will officially be known as Google Meet.

If there was ever any doubt that Google wasn't a fan of the name Hangouts, it's clear now. The internet giant has rebranded the online conferencing platform Hangouts Meet to Google Meet. The old name still exists on the mobile app. However, we shouldn't expect it to stick around for long given the changes made on the web.

It's uncertain what prompted the change, although Hangouts didn't have the best reputation. For many, it was the unfortunate image of Google's messaging app mix-up, including Allo and other unsuccessful services. It seems that if Google introduces its video conferencing feature for corporate crowds, a name evoking images of street corner chats (also known as Hangouts) doesn't sound very professional. A name change might help customers view Google Meet more seriously rather than switching to Zoom or other alternatives.
