3. History of the Hanoi Grand Opera House
The Grand Opera House is a miniature version of the Opéra Garnier in Paris. This structure was built over a period of 10 years, from 1901 to 1911. Initially, the opera house specialized in hosting cultural and artistic performances both domestically and internationally. In 1995, the government decided to renovate the opera house with an investment of 156 billion VND in preparation for the Francophone Summit. The architects Hồ Thiệu Trị and Hoàng Đạo Kính played pivotal roles in this significant renovation.
As of now, the Grand Opera House has surpassed 100 years. It not only boasts magnificent architecture but also hosts numerous conferences and events of international stature for our country.
The opera house spans an area of up to 2,600 square meters, divided into 3 spacious floors. Currently, the opera house still retains the characteristic architecture of the French colonial period.
After 100 years of use, the grand structure constructed by the French colonial authorities in the early 20th century still preserves its original architectural features. The construction process of the opera house is a long historical tale that you'll be guided through by enthusiastic tour guides when visiting.
