In the past, liking a pair of shoes - a shirt, a pair of pants is one thing. But having the money to buy them is another story. Even if you have the money, getting your hands on those items isn't easy because the distribution channels are not sufficient.
Buying means waiting, waiting for the order to come back - waiting a long time to hold it in your hands - to breathe in, to smell the new stuff. If you've ever been a sneaker collector before, you'll remember the feeling of having new shoes. You're afraid to wear them out, every morning waking up - looking at the shoes and feeling genuinely happy, life feels warm and full.
Or having a new shirt, new pants that you haven't worn immediately. Saving them for a special event before daring to 'Unbox' and wear them. Back then, there wasn't much media, buying and selling a fashion item depended on personal opinion - self-determination. Once you liked it, you'd ignore everything to buy it. Disregard the world, disregard the mouths that laugh and mock.
But the thing is, due to the lack of information, I'd delve deep, very clear. Understanding thoroughly, even if I haven't bought it yet, as long as someone asks, I can talk endlessly for 180 minutes just about that pair of shoes, the fashion item that I like.
Owning them now - it's about caring for them more than caring for a loved one. Wear them often and fear they'll wrinkle, so I have to use tissue paper to stuff them and maintain their shape (back then, we didn't know about shoe trees).
Wearing them a lot means fearing they'll get dirty - dust and dirt causing heartache. When going out, I choose clean paths to walk, and if they get dirty, when I return home, I'll sit down meticulously, wiping each line, cleaning here and there - thorough cleaning.
But now - that fiery passion for fashion gradually fades away, forgotten in the past.
We live in the age of technology, of online shopping, of e-commerce. If we like something, just one click - and we can buy it, maybe just facing customs and taxes once. Waiting for us now is always easy - sometimes a month feels like a week. Life's pace is fast - not as slow as in the old days.
Today, we are obedient sheep of the markets. Sales are constant, beginning of the month sales - mid-month paycheck sales - end of the month closing sales. Sales on overlapping days, special days sales. Buying clothes now has to coincide with discount periods, with free shipping. The excitement of anticipation is clearly not as much as before, the value of clothing only stops at the level of normal demand (I'm talking about the mass market, not the luxury fashion market).
Today, we don't need to research much. Fashion magazines hype up something, everyone rushes to buy it, celebrities wear something, and we buy it too. Trendy, happy - a bit of fame, and that's it. Knowledge? Now, who cares to listen.
Today - buying shoes might be more of a 'whim' for us, but it's not love, it's 'Investment'. We spend a lot of money on these shoes, what benefit does it bring us. And now, comfort is no longer the top criterion. Once it's an investment, it has to bring returns. What are the returns? Usually fame, self-expression - uniqueness, the rarity that few possess, something we have for ourselves.
Is it because we've grown up or has love faded…
