On the first day of September, Hanoi is filled with the scent of milk flowers, immersed in the dreamy autumn breeze on the streets, and the hearts of Hanoians are filled with excitement in the air as they prepare to celebrate the 70th anniversary of National Day on September 2nd. What could be more joyful, more eagerly anticipated, or more prideful than amidst the capital bustling with fluttering flags under the golden sunshine.
September in Hanoi has never been so beautiful
That's why Hanoi has never been more beautiful than it is now, amidst the festive air of the grand celebration. I feel like I'm lost in a distant memory, back to when I was very young, being carried by my father on a unified black bicycle. I sat precariously on the back rack, holding onto a Trang Tien ice cream stick, licking it like a kitten.
And so, my father would take me through Trang Tien, around Hoan Kiem Lake, then up to Dong Xuan Market, past Hang Dau Gate, around West Lake, back to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum... as we rode, he would tell stories about the glorious capital, about a Hanoi in 1945... My father would say, 'Hanoi is beautiful and peaceful like this because of the countless sacrifices of our compatriots and soldiers, so you must learn to love and cherish it.'
That was Hanoi in September 1985, still magnificent and beautiful amidst the vibrant display of colorful flags. Thirty years later, Hanoi today is different, even more beautiful and prosperous, yet it still retains those rows of trees, street corners, and old brown-gray doors and windows.
And Hanoi always has its most splendid day of the year, September 2nd, a day ablaze with celebration. What greater happiness is there than having a day to remember, to be proud of, a place to return to, to reminisce and find solace.
