Approximately 15 km from the city of Huế, Huyền Không Mountain Retreat is a serene haven for those seeking a temporary escape from urban life.
Scenic Beauty of Huyền Không Mountain Retreat

Known as the land of ancient temples, Huế boasts historical temples dating back centuries. Huyền Không Mountain Retreat (also known as Huyền Không 2) is nestled deep in a lush pine forest spanning about 50 hectares, surrounded by mountains, and accessed through winding roads, making it a lesser-known destination. Established in 1989, the temple is located in Chầm village, Hương Hồ ward, Hương Trà town.
After ascending a steep hill, the temple unfolds with a harmonious landscape reminiscent of a watercolor painting. The atmosphere is tranquil, with the only sounds being the rustle of insects and the melodious chirping of birds.
The temple complex includes the Outer Compound and the Inner Compound. While the Inner Compound is dedicated entirely to meditation, the Outer Compound serves as a place for activities, worship, sightseeing, and more. Visitors can explore the Main Hall, Purple Cloud Pavilion, Welcoming Pavilion, Guest House, Harmony Hall, Tranquility Court, Monastic Abode, orchids, and various auxiliary structures.
The main structures are crafted from wood, simple yet harmonious with nature. The central hall draws inspiration from a traditional Hue-style house, predominantly constructed with wood and tiled with fish scale-shaped tiles – embodying the spirit of Hue and Vietnam. Ascending the stone steps, visitors reach the bell tower, offering a panoramic view of the temple from above.
Situated atop a high mountain, the temple is surrounded by lush forests and lakes, creating a mild and pleasant atmosphere year-round. The verdant garden is adorned with a variety of flowers such as azaleas, chrysanthemums, orchids, bamboo, apricot, phoenix trees, and pine trees... complemented by numerous Buddha statues.
Within the temple grounds, ponds cultivate lotus flowers and water lilies, featuring faux-wooden bridges for island access. Travelers can find tranquility under bamboo clusters or pavilions amidst the lake, enjoying the serene and peaceful ambiance. Additionally, they can gaze into the distance, appreciating the beauty of nature with the bell tower nestled amidst majestic mountains.
Beyond the scenic beauty reminiscent of a paradise, the temple holds the hidden treasures of calligraphy art and verses written by the resident abbot, known by the pen name Minh Duc Trieu Tam Anh. Inscribed on the entrance gate and wooden columns in the central hall and cloud-kissed meditation hall are Vietnamese calligraphic couplets like:
“The pen erects a forest of pine, clouds and water shimmer, esteemed guests, the fragrant aroma of leaves,
Poetry echoes in the bamboo garden, mist swirls gracefully, friendly companions, the warm sun graces the courtyard!”
The directional signs within the temple convey gentle verses that touch the hearts of visitors. At the shoe storage area, a sign reads: “Thanks to dusty shoes on the road/ Fragrance lingers in the right place on the journey back.” Travelers may also easily encounter calligraphic lines engraved on stones or hung within the temple grounds.

If you find yourself in Hue, try spending an early morning at Huyen Khong Son Thuong Temple. Everyone who visits wishes to linger a bit longer, immersing themselves in nature and relishing the tranquil, serene space.
“The journey to the temple, though a bit challenging, allows me to admire the beautiful scenery of forests, mountains, and surrounding rice fields. The landscape within the temple harmonizes with nature, giving me a sense of relaxation and peace,” shared Kim Yen, a traveler.
Travelers can combine a visit to Thien Mu Pagoda and Huyen Khong 1 Temple on the same route to save time. To reach Huyen Khong Son Thuong Temple, pass through Thien Mu Pagoda along the Perfume River, through Van Thanh and Vo Thanh, across the Xuoc Du Bridge, travel about 1 km further, then turn right into Dong Cham Village. From here, continue about 500 m; the road will intersect with the national highway. Going straight, you will see the entrance to Dong Cham Cultural Village on the right. After entering the village gate, 200 m ahead, on the right, there is a sign directing to the temple written in calligraphy. Following this route, it's about 3 km to the destination.
