A peculiar architectural style has been discovered at Renji Shanzhuang apartment complex in Beijing. At the top of this building lies not a rooftop, but a… mountain.
The concept of building an artificial mountain was conceived by a quirky professor named Zhang. In 2007, he purchased a 100m2 apartment on the highest floor of the apartment complex and then embarked on this 1-0-2 project.
The nearly 1000m2 roof has been transformed into a luxurious mountain villa complete with rocks, gardens, and lush vegetation. While all the rocks used are artificial, the trees and plants are 100% real.
Mr. Zhang's 'Heavenly Mountain' was completed after 6 years of construction. Throughout that time, the residents living in the apartment complex had to endure deafening noise, water leaks, and a host of other troubles.
They have also complained to the authorities on numerous occasions. Consequently, recently, the local government has compelled Mr. Zhang to provide documentation proving the legality of this construction, or else he will be forced to dismantle it within 15 days.
