Firstly, you need to determine your needs to make a purchasing decision. Based on my experience, in the first year, students usually study more general subjects than specialized ones.
Although these subjects may not require much computer-based practice, having a laptop for researching information or getting started with group work on the computer would be much more convenient.
Moreover, in the era where you have to do everything online right from the start of your studies, a laptop is truly essential for your learning. With 2 years of online learning experience, I firmly believe that studying on a laptop is much more effective and enjoyable than on a smartphone.
Not to mention, with a laptop, you can entirely find online jobs and earn money from them. Besides, a laptop is also a place to relieve stress after hours of studying. Playing games, watching movies, or using the laptop for designing and writing are also great ways to entertain yourself.
In summary, should new students buy a laptop? The answer still depends on your needs and financial situation. A laptop will accompany you for many years, so careful consideration is extremely important.

Laptops for engineering and information technology students
Engineering and information technology students mostly need a laptop with a large screen and high resolution. Additionally, the performance of the machine is crucial as students in these fields frequently use software such as Eclipse, Xampp, Autocad, Pro Engineer, Solidworks...
Therefore, the RAM of the machine should be at least 8 GB and the CPU should be from Intel core i5 - i7 or Ryzen 5 - Ryzen 7... to handle these applications. A laptop with graphics card support is also a good choice for students in these fields for smoother and faster performance.
Laptops for design, graphics, and architecture students
New students majoring in graphic design, architecture, etc., will need to invest heavily in configuration and display capabilities. A machine with a clear Full HD display and true-to-life colors will be essential for students in this field.
Furthermore, you'll also need a laptop with high configuration such as a minimum of 8 GB RAM to run heavy design software like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, 3Ds Max, etc. A laptop with graphics card support is also a prerequisite for choosing a machine in this field.
TECHNICAL GRAPHICS LAPTOP
Laptops for economics, languages, law students, etc.
For those who choose fields like economics, languages, law, etc., they usually use laptops for document search, report writing, Microsoft Office, etc. Therefore, a cheap laptop with moderate configuration can already meet all usage needs throughout their studies.
For students in these fields, choosing a laptop with at least a core i3 chip is ideal. RAM should be a minimum of 4 GB for better multitasking.
