Travelers and locals in the 'Land of Happiness' Bhutan are excitedly welcoming the early spring snowfall starting from mid-March 2017, showcasing rare and stunning sights.
Hey there, Bhutan's snowy season is melting away.

What's fascinating is snowfall amidst Bhutan's vibrant spring, where flowers are in full bloom. March snow creates rare scenes like cherry blossoms dusted in snow, snowflakes falling all day creating 15 – 20cm thick ice layers in Bhutan's mountainous regions. Some areas like Gasa even received up to 30cm.
In recent years, snow in Bhutan has been sparse and brief. Thus, in the capital Thimphu or Paro (in the northwest), the March 2017 snowfall is the heaviest in over 10 years.
Even Bumthang in central Bhutan witnessed snow. This is a rare spring snowfall after over 20 years in Bumthang.
Travelers from all corners arriving for Bhutan tourism during this 'spring snow' period witness cities blanketed in snow from rooftops to trees to fields.
Children, locals, and even monks in many places spill onto the streets for fun, capturing flying snowflakes, building snowmen, and admiring the scenery. Residents of the capital Thimphu often take children up to high mountains to play in the snow.
Elderly Bhutanese say that thick snow is a sign of a bountiful agricultural season as it helps crops thrive with sufficient water and moisture.
Many Bhutanese I met during the trip expressed that they always look forward to the early snowfall as snowflakes bring joy to everyone.
Moreover, spring snowfall creates rare romantic scenes coinciding with the cherry blossom season throughout Bhutan.
