Highlighting the Most Regrettable Mistakes of the Smartphone Market in 2023

There were numerous bright spots for the smartphone industry in 2023. Over the past year, many contenders in the foldable smartphone segment have emerged, offering quality products at more affordable prices. Additionally, the mid-range smartphone segment saw fierce competition among manufacturers, resulting in them possessing more premium features.

However, not everything was rosy. Every major triumph in the mobile sector this year had a corresponding failure or serious mistake. Below are the most regrettable mistakes of the smartphone market in 2023.

The iPhone 15 Pro Lineup Encounters Overheating Issues

Apple's iPhone 15 brings new technology to the iPhone 15 Pro lineup. This is particularly intriguing because Apple's iPhones charge much slower than their competitors. Fortunately, Apple has released a software update for the iPhone 15 Pro series. However, this remains a significant mistake by Apple, leaving many disappointed in the product quality.

Many brands still lag behind in software updates

In 2023, we saw many major players in the smartphone industry announce new policies to provide longer-term software support for their devices. However, some companies still fail to do so.

ASUS, Sony, TCL, and ZTE have all made disappointing commitments to software updates in 2023. These brands only provide 1 or 2 major OS updates and 2 or 3 years of security patches. This is particularly unacceptable for a flagship device like the Sony Xperia 1 V.

Pixel 8 Pro Temperature Sensor

In May of last year, a leaked video revealed that the Pixel 8 Pro flagship could be used as a thermometer. This turned out to be true as the phone is indeed equipped with a temperature sensor on the back.

Unfortunately, real-world implementation has proven to be more of a marketing gimmick than useful. Testing by Androidauthority on the Pixel 8 Pro's temperature sensor showed that it lacks accuracy compared to dedicated infrared thermometers. Having to hold a $1,000 phone several inches away from the desired object/subject also doesn't offer much utility.

A potential consolation is that Google is collaborating with the FDA to seek regulatory approval for using the temperature sensor on humans. So, it might be more useful and accurate in the future, but for now, this sensor doesn't have much practicality.

Nothing Chats 

Nothing enjoys creating drama. At times, they resemble more of an advertising company than a consumer technology company. And over the past year, their Nothing Chats story has been a major disappointment for users.

Nothing Chats is a messaging app that allows owners of Nothing Phone to use iMessage, supported by the Sunbird app. Unfortunately, the underlying Sunbird technology raises significant concerns regarding security and privacy. Therefore, Nothing has removed the Nothing Chats app from the Play Store despite much anticipation from users.
