1. History of July 27th Veterans and Martyrs Day
After the successful August Revolution in 1945, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam) was established. While the revolutionary government was still in its infancy, French colonialists conspired to invade our country once again.
Our troops and people, with the determination to defend the revolutionary achievements and preserve independence and freedom, bravely fought against the invading forces. In this struggle, many soldiers and compatriots fell, sacrificing their blood and bones on the battlefield.
To somewhat alleviate the loss suffered by the families of the soldiers and compatriots, the Vietnamese government initiated efforts to establish an organization called the Association for Helping Deceased Soldiers. In early 1946, the Association for Helping Deceased Soldiers (later renamed the Association for Assisting Wounded Soldiers) was established in Thuan Hoa (Binh Tri Thien) in Hanoi and several other locations.

On December 19, 1946, the nationwide resistance against French colonial invasion erupted. With the spirit of determination to sacrifice for the homeland, people across the country stood up to resist. Due to disparities in weaponry and combat tactics, the number of casualties and fatalities increased, making life challenging for soldiers, especially the wounded.
In response to the situation, on February 16, 1947, President Ho Chi Minh officially signed Decree No. 20/SL, establishing the pension, disability, and funeral benefits for martyrs. This was the inaugural legal document affirming the crucial role of veteran affairs and the concern of the Party, State, and Government for veterans, the disabled, and the families of martyrs.
During the meeting in Dai Tu (Bac Thai) in June 1947, the delegates unanimously selected July 27 as the National Veterans Day. Since then, every year on this date, President Ho Chi Minh has consistently sent letters, gifts, words of encouragement, and visited the families of veterans and martyrs.
From July 1955 onwards, the Vietnamese Party and State changed the National Veterans Day to Veterans and Martyrs Day.

Following the liberation of the South and the reunification of the country, pursuant to Directive 223/CT-TW dated July 8, 1975, issued by the Central Committee of the Party, since 1975, July 27 every year has officially become National Veterans and Martyrs Day.
