If Hanoi's capital boasts Hoan Kiem Lake as one of its prominent symbols, then Hai Phong takes pride in Hồ Tam Bạc, a lake located in the city center witnessing many historical events.
Hồ Tam Bạc – A Dreamy Icon of the 'City of Scarlet Flamboyant'
Hồ Tam Bạc, originally Liem Khe Canal in the old An Bien village. In 1885, the French straightened and expanded the canal into the Bonnal Canal, separating the Western and Vietnamese quarters.

By 1925, the French had excavated a section from Hai Phong port to the present-day exhibition hall, and the remaining stretch was named the Tam Bạc River. In 1985, marking the 100th anniversary of the Tam Bạc River, the city transformed the stretch between Tran Nguyen Han and Quang Trung into a lake, now known as Hồ Tam Bạc.

Hồ Tam Bạc covers an area of nearly 5 hectares, with a depth of about 3 meters. The entire promenade and sidewalks around the lake are paved with granite and shaded by trees, providing stone benches for visitors to relax and enjoy the scenery.

The lake's surrounding railing is crafted from natural stone, adorned with carved images of phoenix flowers and anchors. Every 3 meters, a stone pillar stands tall at 1.25 meters. Ancient banyan trees intersperse with phoenix trees along the lake.

Surrounding the lake are distinctive architectural structures of Hai Phong, including the Tam Ky Temple, the statue of the female general Le Chan, the Iron Market, pedestrian streets, Ngo Quyen School, Trang Trinh Street, and more.

The city center around Lake Tam Bạc is modernizing day by day, becoming a famous tourist destination in Hai Phong and an emblem of the port city. In the evening, the lake comes alive with sports activities, fishing, dating, and entertainment.

When you come for fun at Lake Tam Bạc, don't forget to indulge in the local specialties. Right next to the lake is a pedestrian street with hundreds of snack and beverage stalls. Must-try dishes include grilled chicken feet, grilled nem, tamarind juice, spicy bread, chrysanthemum tea, and coconut ice cream.
