Witnessing the perilous situation, the Dragon King lent the magic sword to King Le Thai To to fight the invaders, helping our people successfully repel the foreign aggressors. Subsequently, the country achieved peace, with no sign of the enemy remaining.
One day, while King Le Thai To was strolling on the lake, the divine turtle suddenly emerged and demanded the king return the magic sword that the Dragon King had lent. The king returned the sword to the divine turtle, and it disappeared beneath the water. Since then, Luc Thuy Lake was renamed Hoan Kiem Lake. The legend and the sacred turtle living in Hoan Kiem Lake remain a mystery yet to be solved to this day.
In 1884, during the 19th century, when Vietnam became a French colony, they extensively renovated the landscapes around Hoan Kiem Lake. The ancient streets around the lake were all planned and constructed by the French. After regaining independence, Hanoi preserved the colonial-era structures and continued to conserve and develop them to this day.

The Hoan Kiem Lake turtle, scientifically known as Rafetus Leloii or Rafetus Vietnamensis, belongs to the softshell turtle family and is quite large in size.
