Recently, the renowned YouTube channel JerryRigEverything conducted a durability test on Ultra's sapphire glass to compare it with other smartwatches using the same material.

YouTuber JerryRigEverything has posted a new video where he tests the hardness of the sapphire glass of Apple Watch Ultra as well as that of Galaxy Watch 5 and Garmin Fenix 7. The main purpose of the experiment is to find out if these watches actually have sapphire glass as advertised by the companies.
According to Zack's (the YouTube channel's host) explanation, sapphire is a material with hardness close to that of diamond. While regular tempered glass scratches at level 6, sapphire scratches at level 8 or even 9 depending on its purity.
Apple has stated that they have been using sapphire material in their devices since the iPhone 5 - the first device to have sapphire glass on its camera lens. However, what Apple actually uses is synthetic sapphire material, not as hard as pure sapphire. But what about the Apple Watch Ultra?

JerryRigEverything's test reveals that the screen of Apple Watch Ultra is indeed covered by real sapphire, but there are some things to note. In the tests, the sapphire crystal on Apple Watch Ultra suffered light scratches at levels 6 and 7, while more severe damage actually appeared at level 8.
Similar results with Galaxy Watch 5, although the scratches at levels 6 and 7 on this watch are less visible compared to on Apple Watch Ultra. The YouTuber explains that this may be due to impurities in the material or polishing issues. For Garmin Fenix 7, the tests show that it has the purest sapphire crystal among these three watches, as it hardly suffers any abrasion at levels 6 and 7.
But overall, neither Apple, Samsung, nor Garmin are lying when they say their watches have sapphire glass, although the screen of Apple Watch Ultra seems to be slightly more prone to scratching than its competitors'. You can watch the full video by JerryRigEverything below:
