Hey folks, today I'm sharing a brief glimpse into how I've smartened up the electrical gadgets in my home. If you're curious, stick around for more details later or feel free to ask away!
1/ Is Smartening Up Home Devices Essential Right After Installing Electrical Appliances?
The answer is not necessarily. Although smart home devices aren't readily compatible with existing electrical appliances and often strive to create a complete product, knowing how can still leverage smart home devices to smarten up household electronics. In this piece, I mainly focus on Xiaomi products since they're what I primarily use at home, with no intention of switching to other brands due to the hassle of dealing with different ecosystems.
2/ Barriers and Solutions to Smartening Up Home Devices?
When I attempted to smarten up the indoor lighting system (using old tube bulbs), I considered 2 options.
- Option 1: Replace all light switches with smart switches => This approach later became unfeasible as my house's wall sockets are rectangular while Xiaomi's smart switches are square-shaped.
- Option 2: Substitute the bulbs with smart bulbs => This approach also ended up failing because Xiaomi doesn't offer this type of tube bulb, only a few weak Philips bulbs.
=> Finally, I came up with PA3, which is installing an intermediary smart socket between the switch and the bulb (it might be a bit bulky, but if cleverly hidden, it's no big deal). With this method, I successfully smartened up the entire lighting system in my home.
You can apply a similar approach to most household items. Feel free to share additional scenarios for discussion. I also just finished setting up remote computer activation for my wife while writing this article.
3/ What are the benefits of smartening up household devices?
When I began to smarten up my home devices, the first question that arose was whether this had any benefits or just added to the electricity bill. The answer is that there are indeed many benefits, but they're more of a nice-to-have rather than a must-have.
Consider this scenario: It's winter, and you're getting into bed, all cozy under the covers, only to realize that the living room light is still on. With voice commands, you can easily turn off the light without having to get out of bed. However, if you don't have this capability, getting out of bed isn't a big deal either. That's the essence of smarthome technology—it's optional, not essential.
4/ Conclusion
There's no perfect ecosystem catering to all smart home needs. Some prefer controlling lights, toggling TVs/computers, or operating garage doors remotely... Exploring and applying available solutions to control what we desire without deep technical knowledge can make setting up a smart home both exciting and cost-effective.
PS: Currently, I'm stuck trying to control my garage door within Xiaomi's ecosystem or finding a solution compatible with Google Home (if anyone knows a workaround, please share it with me)
