Imagine sharing your Mac with friends or family, or lending it to them. Setting up multiple user accounts on macOS is crucial to safeguard your personal data like browsing history and secure passwords.
Setting up multiple macOS accounts is the perfect solution for ensuring data security. Every time you start up your Mac or wake it from Sleep mode, users will need to choose an account to access.
To switch between accounts quickly and easily, the solution is to activate the Fast User Switching icon on the menu bar. Refer to the following Mytour article to learn how to activate Fast User Switching on macOS.
How to Activate Fast User Switching on macOS
The Fast Switching icon is integrated into the macOS menu bar and users can activate it anytime, especially on computers with multiple user accounts.
By default, this menu item displays the full name of the current user, located near the top-right corner. Users simply need to click on the account they want to switch to and enter the password.
If you don't see the Fast User Switching icon, access the System Preferences and then choose Users & Groups.
In the Users & Groups window, click on Login Options. The options in this section will be locked (turned gray), your task is to click on the padlock icon located at the bottom-left corner, enter the password, and activate the Show fast user switching menu as option.
By default, the menu bar will display the full names of current users, but if desired, you can choose to only display icons. This is to free up some space in the menu bar.
From now on, whenever you use your Mac, you can quickly switch to your account. If your Mac has Touch ID, you can easily switch users using your fingerprint.
Currently, Touch ID is available for laptops but is not used for multiple users and accounts. We can hope that this feature will soon be available on iMac and Mac Mini in the future.
