While adding line numbers in Excel might involve typing numbers and dragging cells, or using commands, adding line numbers in Word requires utilizing the available tools within the Word application to format and organize text with appropriate numbering, or alternatively using bullets, or borders to create formatting.

Guide to Adding Line Numbers in Word 2019
In this guide, we'll demonstrate two methods for adding line numbers in Word 2019.
Method 1: Apply Before Composition
With this method, you insert characters before typing or composing text. Press Ctrl + Alt + L. After pressing, the automatic numbering characters appear. Each time you press Enter -> repeat the process as before, it will automatically create the first-line characters of the next number.
Method 2: Apply During and After the Editing Process
Step 1: Select (highlight) the text you want to create line numbers for -> then click the line numbering icon, choosing whether to use numbers, letters, or special characters as described in the image below:
Step 2: When you select numbers as line numbers, the result will appear as shown in the image below:
When using numbers as line numbers, you can create hierarchical line numbers for each item by selecting the Multilevel List icon -> Choose the appropriate hierarchical characters.
You can also create custom line numbers by clicking on Define New Bullet.
The interface of Define New Bullet will appear. You will have the following options:
- Symbol: Allows selection of special characters available in Word.
- Picture: Allows selection of images stored on the computer.
- Font: Allows selection of font styles.
For example, you choose Symbol -> then, click OK.
The Symbol interface appears -> you choose the character you want -> then click OK.
After you click OK, you will return to the Define New Bullet interface -> next, click OK.
And the result after adding line numbers using Symbol characters will be as shown in the image below:
How to Remove Line Numbers in Word
To remove the created line numbers, follow the same steps as in Step 1 and choose None.
For older versions of Word such as Word 2016, 2013, 2010, and 2007, you can follow the instructions provided.
