You can backup important data from your Android phone to Google Drive. This feature, integrated into the Android operating system for a long time, is often used to backup all data such as contacts, Gmail emails, WiFi passwords, messages sent via Hangouts, etc. Until the release of Android Oreo, the backup data list still did not include call logs and SMS messages. Some devices, especially Pixel phones, have long supported the backup feature for messages and call logs prior to Oreo, but now, you can backup call logs and SMS on every Android device running Oreo.
Backing Up Calls and Messages on Android Oreo
This feature is just as easy as enabling backup on Google Drive. The only requirement is that your phone has been updated to Android Oreo.
Open the Settings app and go to System > Backup. If you haven't opened it before, you need to open it, select your account, and choose the data you want to backup.
If you prefer not to backup all data on your mobile to Google Drive, you can directly turn off this feature from the Backup screen. Alternatively, if you don't want to backup call logs and message data, it's advisable to disable it.
While being one of the features of Android Oreo, not all Android Oreo users may be aware of this functionality. The call and message backup feature is already available on mobile devices such as Pixel, Nexus 6P, Nokia 3, and Nokia 5, running Android Oreo. According to information from Android Oreo users on Nexus 5X, this feature does not appear for some reason. The reason could be attributed to the Oreo update they are using. Pixel, Nexus 6P, and Nokia devices all installed every Oreo update almost immediately after they were available.
If you've installed Oreo on your mobile by flashing ROM, you may not see this feature appear or it may have been removed from your device by the mobile manufacturer. This can occur if your mobile has an Android Oreo version that has been heavily modified and contains excessive bloatware apps from the manufacturer.
Call log and SMS information will not be downloaded through Google Takeout or backed up to a computer, at least not in a directly accessible format, but will be embedded into another Android device. MMS messages are not supported for backup.
