Batch renaming files on Windows may be straightforward, but if you're transitioning to Mac OS X, how do you batch rename files with just a few simple steps? Finder helps you quickly adapt to the simplest things on your Mac computer.
This batch file renaming utility is part of Finder, meaning you don't need to download add-ons or DIY Automator tools to use it. It's powerful and easy to use, offering similar functionality to Find & Replace in other applications. However, it limits file or folder names of the items selected in Finder in Mac OS X.
How to Batch Rename Files Using Finder on Mac OS X
Step 1: Select the files from Finder on Mac OS X that you want to batch rename.
Step 2: Right-click (or press and hold Control + click) on the selected files, then choose Rename X Items, where X is the number of files you've selected to rename.
Step 3: In the Rename Finder Items window that appears on the screen, select Replace from the dropdown menu.
Step 4: In the Find box, enter the strings of file names you want to rename, and in the Replace With box, enter the name you want to use to replace the file names. For example, in the window of Rename Finder Item below, it will display the names of the files that have been renamed:
Step 5: Click on Rename to batch rename files using Finder on Mac OS X.
The process of batch renaming files using Finder on Mac OS X happens almost instantly, but if you're renaming hundreds or thousands of selected files, it may take about 1 to 2 seconds to complete the renaming process. After finishing the process, you can immediately see the results in Finder, where the file names will be changed to the names you selected in the renaming utility.
The Rename Finder Items tool offers three renaming options: searching and replacing names as mentioned above, the ability to add names to files, and finally, the ability to rename and change the format of file names completely different from the usual batch renaming method on Mac OS X Yosemite. You can choose these options through the dropdown menu on the utility window.
Batch renaming files is undeniably a useful feature. You can use this feature to rename hundreds, even thousands of files, quickly and much more easily than renaming each file individually.
The Rename Finder Items feature is only available in Mac OS X 10.10 or higher versions. So if you're using Mac OS X 10.10 or higher, you can use this Automator tool to batch rename files.
Automator scripts are integrated and work on modern versions of Mac OS X. Now users can easily batch rename file names without spending much time.
If you select a file in Finder, when you right-click on that file, you'll notice that the Rename function is missing from the context menu. This is because renaming a file or a folder is done by selecting the file or folder, then clicking on the file name or pressing Return to rename the file.
