The ancestral altar holds immense spiritual importance as it serves as a sacred space for ancestors and deities. Proper care and maintenance are essential to uphold its sanctity. To ensure compliance with customary practices when cleaning the ancestral altar, it's crucial to consider the following guidelines.
Maintaining the Cleanliness of the Ancestral Altar on Ritual Days
Essential Tips for Cleaning and Preparing the Ancestral Altar on Special Ritual Days
1. Before cleaning the ancestral altar, the person in charge should cleanse themselves thoroughly, dress appropriately, and prepare fruits to offer. Lighting an incense stick signals to ancestors and deities that the altar will be cleaned. The cleaner should also prepare necessary tools, including red paper and a table covered with a red cloth to place offerings. If the altar is shared between ancestors and deities, separate locations should be designated. Wait until the incense burns out completely before starting the cleaning process.
2. Use warm water to clean the offerings. If there are offerings for Buddha, clean them first and then discard the water before proceeding to clean the offerings for ancestors. It's essential not to clean the Buddha's offerings after the ancestors' offerings, as this is considered disrespectful. Then, clean the incense holder by removing the ash with a spoon.
After arranging everything, light 12 incense sticks according to the following sequence:
- The first incense stick should be placed at the 1 o'clock position while reciting 'niên niên thị hảo niên'
- The second incense stick should be placed at the 2 o'clock position while reciting 'nguyệt nguyệt thị hảo nguyệt'
- The third incense stick should be placed at the 3 o'clock position while reciting 'nhật nhật thị hảo nhật'
- The fourth incense stick should be placed at the 4 o'clock position while reciting 'thờ thời vị hảo thời'
Continue this process until the 12th incense stick. The arrangement of ancestral offerings and incense holders should follow the same procedure.
The ancestral altar is a spiritual element that brings luck, health, and security to everyone. If the altar is properly maintained, descendants will receive blessings and prosperity will flourish. Therefore, besides cleaning the altar, individuals must express sincere reverence to Buddha and ancestors.
In addition to cleaning the altar and preparing offerings, it's essential to prepare ritual scripts for the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month. Reading the ritual scripts properly demonstrates utmost respect and devotion to the higher powers.
