Connecting 2 computers via LAN for gaming on Windows 10, 8, 7
Method 1: Direct connection using Ethernet cable.
Step 1: Use a crossover Ethernet cable and plug it directly into the LAN port on each device. If you're unsure, you can refer back to our previous article on how to crimp Ethernet cables for a better understanding.
Step 2: Next, we'll set up a static IP address for each device. Specifically, on the Windows interface, right-click on the computer icon in the system tray and select Open Network and Sharing Center as shown below.
Step 3: The Network and Sharing Center interface appears, click on the Ethernet section.
Step 4: Click on Properties in the Ethernet Status dialog box.
Step 5: Next, double-click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) or select the Properties button below.
Step 6: Check the box next to Use the following IP address, then change the IP of the first computer with the following configuration and click OK to save.
IP address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.2
Step 7: Similarly, on the second computer, change the IP address as follows so that the IP address of the first computer is the default gateway of the second computer and vice versa.
IP address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.1
Once you've completed the setup, you can comfortably play games, share data without the need for any other devices. However, this method is limited in that it can only connect 2 computers to each other. If you have more than 2 computers, you can consider the following method.
Method 2: Connecting 2 or more computers via LAN
In case you have more than 2 computers but no modem or internet, all you need is a switch and Ethernet cables to connect the computers to this switch. After connecting the Ethernet cables from the computers to the switch, follow these steps:
Step 1: Right-click on the computer icon in the bottom right corner of the screen and select Open Network and Sharing Center.
Step 2: The Network and Sharing Center interface appears, click on the Ethernet section.
Step 3: Click on Properties in the Ethernet Status dialog box.
Step 4: Next, double-click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) or select the Properties button below.
Step 5: Check the box next to Use the following IP address, change the IP of the first computer with the following configuration, and click OK to save.
IP address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.1
Step 6: Similarly, for the next computers, set static IP addresses as follows: 192.168.0.3, 192.168.0.4,… 192.168.0.n ensuring no repetition within the IP range.
