Curtains play a vital role in various rooms, but arranging them properly can pose a challenge. If you need to adjust the length of your curtains, tying a basic knot provides a simple and efficient solution. Alternatively, if you prefer to secure your curtains with a knot, consider using drapery ties and wall hooks.
Steps
Forming a Simple Knot

Gather the curtain fabric into a single column. Ensure your curtains are firmly attached to a rod. Gather the fabric of the curtain to one side, creating a thick column. Remove any cords or tie-backs attached to the curtain at this stage.

Twist a narrow section of the curtain around the bundle in a clockwise direction. Grasp the middle part of the curtain with one hand and use the other hand to hold the outer edge of the fabric. Wind this thin section of fabric behind the gathered fabric, then loop it back around to the front.
- You'll only wrap a single layer of fabric around the curtains to form the knot.

Secure the knot using the loose end of the fabric. Take the loose corner of the curtain and tuck it behind the wrapped part of the curtain. Ensure that the curtain is fully tucked in to create a sturdy knot.
Utilizing Drapery Ties

Form a loop with the right line, Line B. Leave approximately 4 to 5 inches (10 to 13 cm) of space between the loop and the end of Line B so that you can tie a comfortable knot to secure your curtains. The loop itself should only be about 2 inches (5.1 cm) long, depending on the overall size of your cord.
- If you're using a tasseled cord, ensure there's at least 2 to 3 inches (5.1 to 7.6 cm) between the loop and the top of the tassel.
- You'll be creating a knotted bow with your drapery tie and utilizing the loops of this bow to hold back your curtains.

Wind Line A, the left line, around the loop 4-5 times. When wrapping, aim to coil the loop counterclockwise. Ensure that the end of Line B's loop remains visible from the newly wrapped coils.

Thread line A through the loop to secure it. Insert the end of line A into the loop extending from the left side of the knot. Pull line A through the loop to return it to its original position.

Bring out a fresh loop from the 5 cord coils. Guide line A through the 4-5 cord coils to the right, then thread it out from the opposite end of the knot. Pinch this section of cord into a loop shape using your fingers to ensure symmetry between both sides of the knot.
- Strive for uniform loop sizes.

Pull both loops to cinch the central coils tightly. Use both hands to grasp the loops on opposite sides of the cord. Apply pressure to the loops until the inner coils tighten, completing the knot. Check that both ends of lines A and B are even by pulling on them.

Secure the loops onto 2 separate wall hooks. Install two manual or adhesive hooks on either side of your knotted curtains. Position the hooks directly beside the gathered portion of the curtains. Hang the side loops over the hooks to keep the knotted curtains in place and prevent shifting.
- If placing wall hooks near your curtains isn't feasible, you can skip this step.
