Guide on How to Create VPN for Personal Use or Sharing with Friends
Note: This trick applies to both Windows 7, 8, and Windows 10.
Limitations
Creating and setting up a VPN on your computer using this method also has some limitations:
Once the installation is completed, click on the Allow Access button.
Windows will configure access rights for the added user accounts, which may take a few seconds.
At this point, the VPN server is operational and receiving connection requests. To disable the VPN server, locate and delete the Incoming Connections entry in the Network Connections window.
2. Setting up the Router (Routing Device)
When connecting to a VPN server over the Internet, you'll need to set up port forwarding for the router to route access traffic to the correct PC. Log in to the router setup page and forward port 1723 to the IP address of the computer where you've set up the VPN server.
For maximum security enhancement, you can create a port forwarding rule to forward an external port, such as 23243, to the internal port 1723 on your computer. This allows you to connect to the VPN server through port 23243 and protects you from malicious programs scanning and automatically connecting to the VPN server running on the default port.
Additionally, you can configure the router or firewall to only allow connections from specific IP addresses.
3. Connect to the VPN server
To connect to a VPN server, you need to have the public IP address of your computer (or your network IP address on the Internet) or a dynamic DNS address if you've set up a dynamic DNS service.
On a Windows computer, type 'vpn' into the Search box on the Start menu and click on it in the search results list. Specifically, on Windows 10, you click on Change Virtual Private Networks (VPN), and on Windows 7, it's Set up a virtual private network (VPN) connection.
If prompted, enter a name for the connection and the Internet address (which can be a domain name or IP address).
