IDENTIFYING AN ACTIVE IPHONE
Understanding Activation
In technology terminology, 'Active' refers to the state of being operational or having the capability to function. Therefore, simply put, an Active device is one that has been activated and is operational, whereas a Not Active device is one that has not been activated and is not operational.
Identifying iPhone Activation Status
To determine whether an iPhone is already activated or not, we first need to accurately check the IMEI of the device, then enter the IMEI into Apple's support page for verification. There are various methods to check the IMEI:
- For brand new, sealed devices: You can find the IMEI on the box or the back of the phone.
- For used devices, it's certain that the device has been activated, and we can only check the remaining warranty period. In that case, we follow these steps to check the IMEI:
Step 1: From the device's user interface, navigate to Settings > General > About and scroll down to find your device's IMEI number as shown in the image below.
Additionally, you can also find the IMEI number on your iPhone through another method by accessing the Phone app on your device and dialing *#06#, instantly displaying the 15-digit IMEI number on the device's screen.
Step 2: Next, visit Apple's service and insurance support page HERE and enter the 15-digit IMEI along with the captcha code into the required fields, then press Continue.
Step 3: The warranty status of your iPhone/iPad will be displayed immediately after.
For instance, as shown in the image above, we will have the following information:
1. Phone name and IMEI number
2. Valid Purchase Data: Indicates that your device has been validly activated by Apple.
3. Telephone Technical Support: Information about Apple's software support
- If Telephone Technical Support: Expired as shown in the image above, it means that software support has expired, or in other words, the software warranty period of 3 months as per Apple's regulations has ended.
- If Telephone Technical Support: Active, you will see the duration of Apple's software support (as shown below, until 20/09/2017).
4. Repairs and Service Coverage: Hardware warranty period
- If Repairs and Service Coverage: Expired as shown in the image above, it means that your device's hardware warranty has expired. This is the most important section to check the activation date of your iPhone as well as when the device's warranty expires.
- If Repairs and Service Coverage: Active, you will see the warranty period of the device. To find out the activation date of your iPhone, subtract the default 12-month hardware warranty.
