A simple method to identify whether your fluffy companion is a male or female
Steps to Follow
Turn the rabbit onto its back.
If examining the rabbit alone, gently hold its head and rump, then flip it over onto its back to proceed.
Locate the genital region.
To determine your rabbit's gender, inspect its external genitalia. While on its back, separate the fur between its hind legs. Keep it still as you part the fur with one hand. Both male and female rabbits possess a pink, figure-eight-shaped bump known as the “vent” between their hind legs. This area is where their genitals are situated.
Search for testicles in male rabbits.
A male rabbit’s testicles are externally visible. They reside between its hind legs on either side of the vent. Rabbit testicles are elongated and slender, not spherical like those of a dog. Look for two torpedo-shaped protrusions, one on each side beneath the skin. They typically have a slightly furry, purplish appearance.
Examine the genital openings to determine if they form an “I” or “O” shape.
To find this opening, gently separate the fur between the hind legs until you locate the vent. The vent houses both the anus and the reproductive tract. To get a clearer view, use your fingers to gently apply pressure on either side, opening up the area for better visibility.
Ensure accuracy by examining the penis or vulva.
If you want to be absolutely certain, or if you're having trouble distinguishing between the “I” and the “O”, take another look to identify the presence of the penis or vulva. Apply gentle pressure at the base of the opening, pushing gently towards the rabbit's back. A penis may protrude and become more noticeable as a tube-like structure, while a vulva may reveal itself as the lips peel back in a petal shape.
Determine your rabbit's sex based on their genitalia, not their physical appearance.
Some suggest that a rabbit's sex can be determined by its physical characteristics. However, relying solely on this method is not reliable. Mature adult male rabbits may have a heavier skull than females, but this isn't a foolproof way to sex a rabbit. Always examine the rabbit's genitalia to ensure accuracy.
Consult a veterinarian to confirm.
While checking your rabbit's sex at home is usually accurate, if you require certainty, especially for breeding purposes, it's advisable to have a veterinarian verify it. Your vet can provide professional confirmation, which may be crucial if you have multiple rabbits or specific breeding plans.
