Protected View mode is a feature that Office provides to users to minimize the risk of malware and virus infections when downloading files from the internet. Conversely, if the file you download is safe, Protected View will protect that file from virus infections originating from the device the user just downloaded the file from.

Guide to Turning Off Enable Editing when Opening Excel 2019

To turn off Enable Editing in Excel or exit Protected View, follow the steps provided below:
Step 1: Access the File menu on the toolbar as described in the image below:
Step 2: Select Options at the bottom.
Step 3: Click on Trust Center. A new interface will appear as depicted in the image below. Then, click on Trust Center Settings... on the right side of the screen as depicted in the image below.
Step 4: The Trust Center dialog box will appear. Next, select Protected View. Here, uncheck all the settings as circled in red in the image below. Finally, click OK.
When you download a new Excel file from the internet or reopen a previously downloaded file, you will not encounter the Protected View prompt or need to enable editing to make changes or print the file.
