If you see the file name's extension, you can identify the file format and determine the most suitable program to use. Moreover, this is a way to reset the format for downloaded files that, due to certain issues, do not display the file extension when stored on the computer.
A file's structure consists of ' File Name.file extension'. The file extension is typically 3-4 characters long, for example, abc.jpg, where jpg is the file extension, and the dot separates the file name and the extension. Losing this extension doesn't mean you can't view the files. The simplest way is to make the extension visible and add it to the files to view them normally.
How to Display File Extensions in Windows
Step 1: Open the Folder Options dialog box by:
* In Windows XP: Open Windows Explorer (or My Computer), on the toolbar, click Tools --> Folder Options
* In Windows 7: Open Windows Explorer --> Organize --> Folder and search options
Step 2: In the Folder Options dialog box --> select the View tab --> uncheck the 'Hide extensions for file types' option to display file extensions on your computer --> click OK to save the settings.
File extensions are now visible, as shown in the image below.
Once the file extension (also known as the file format) is displayed, you can freely modify it to suit the software of your choice. Alternatively, add a file extension if the downloaded file on your computer lacks one.
