Snapshots are experimental versions of Minecraft released periodically by Mojang. They include 'work-in-progress' features available for players to test out. Players can provide feedback and report bugs to developers before features are tested in the official update.
Over the years, Mojang has provided (for free) the process of developing the latest features and updates for Minecraft through Snapshots. This gives many Minecraft enthusiasts a reason to look forward to Wednesdays as most Snapshots are released on those days. However, some of us don't know how to take advantage of these free releases and always wait for the official Minecraft update. Therefore, in this article, Mytour will guide you on how to download and play Snapshots in Minecraft to experience upcoming features before they're added to the game.
I. How to Download and Play Snapshots in Minecraft
Players will need to download and install development versions manually. Since Snapshots are usually temporary and only last for a few weeks before the next release, people are less inclined to try out newer versions, resulting in less feedback. Currently, Mojang has made testing these new versions significantly easier, and you just need to follow the steps outlined below to download and play Snapshots in Minecraft.
Step 1: Go to the Installations tab
After opening the Minecraft Launcher, don't click Play. Instead, click on Installations to go to the screen where you can choose the Minecraft version you want to play.
Step 2: Enable and create Snapshot file
This step consists of two parts. Firstly, you need to select Snapshots to make Snapshot available for download and play. Then, click on New.
Step 3: Choose Snapshot version
In the Name field, enter the name for the Snapshot you want to use. If you want this version to be the latest Snapshot when they are released, you should enter Latest Snapshot.
Next, select the Snapshot you want to play. If you want to find the latest Snapshot each time you play, choose Latest Snapshot from the drop-down menu. If you want to play an older Snapshot version or a previous version of Minecraft, simply click on the desired option.
Finally, click on the Create. button. Return to the previous screen, and you will see your new version listed along with other installations. From here, select the Play tab to return to the main screen.
Step 4: Playing Snapshot in Minecraft
After returning to the main menu, you can select the version you want to play at the bottom left of the screen. Choose the version you just installed and click on Play. From this moment on, any world you select or create will include the latest Snapshot and all preceding development versions.
So, you have successfully downloaded and installed a Snapshot in Minecraft. Now, suppose you want to return to the latest official release of Minecraft. You can do so by returning to the main menu and selecting it in the same manner you chose this new Snapshot.
