1. Creating Column Charts in Google Sheets
To create column charts in Google Sheets, follow these steps:
Let's start with a simple spreadsheet, consisting of 2 columns, and add data and labels to these columns as shown below:
Next step, follow the steps below to create column and bar charts in Sheets.
Select all cells containing the data, then from the menu, click on Insert => Chart:
Alternatively, you can click on the chart icon as shown below:
At this point, the screen will display a column chart as shown below:
2. Creating Column Charts with Multiple Data Sets in Google Sheets
To create column charts with multiple different data sets, simply add the data columns to your Sheets and follow the same steps as above.
First, select all cells containing the data in the spreadsheet. From the menu, choose Insert => Chart, or alternatively, click on the chart icon.
At this point, the screen will display the new chart as shown below:
To switch to a different chart type, on the display window at the top right corner of the screen, under the Setup tab, click on the menu icon (the downward arrow icon) next to Chart type and select any chart type you want to use:
3. Creating Stacked Column Charts in Google Sheets
Additionally, to create bar charts or stacked column charts in Google Sheets, on the same window, under the Stacking section, click on Standard as shown below:
The chart will appear as follows:
If desired, you can also select the 100% option to create a stacked column chart depicting individual data proportions.
4. Customizing Column Charts in Google Sheets
In the Chart Editor window, you will see the Customize tab as shown below:
Click on this tab to customize your column chart.
On the display window shown on the screen, the Chart style section includes options allowing you to add background images, border colors, and font styles to the chart. If you're not satisfied with the changes made, you can click on the Reset layout button to revert to the original state.
Additionally, if desired, you can check the box next to the Maximize option to reduce the whitespace displayed in the chart. Select the 3D option to create a chart with 3D bars and columns as shown below:
Choose the Compare mode option to highlight data when hovering over elements on the chart.
Next, in the Chart & axis titles section, you can customize the chart title, as well as font style, font size, format, and text color.
The Series section offers options to change the position of text, aligning it left or right. Simply click on the Axis menu and choose any desired option:
The chart will appear as follows:
To apply formatting to specific data points, click the Add button next to the Format data point option.
In the Legend section, you can customize the legend font, font size, format, and text color.
The Horizontal axis and Vertical axis sections contain options for formatting labels and text on each chart axis.
