When using Excel, there are cases where data is in different Excel files and you need to extract data from one Excel sheet to another. So, you have to create data connections between Excel files to automatically transfer data.

Consider an example: There are inventories for the years 2018 and 2019, where the end inventory for 2018 is the same as the beginning inventory for 2019. So how do you transfer the end inventory data from 2018 to the inventory for 2019?

Step 1: First, you need to get the file path, here you get the path of the file 2018 inventory report by right-clicking on the 2018 inventory report (1) file, select Properties (2).

The Properties window appears, you select the file address under the Location section. Choose Copy then press the OK button to close the window.

Step 2: Open the destination file where you want to retrieve data 2019 inventory report, click on the cell you want to get data from, type an equal sign plus comma (=') then paste the address.

Step 3: Add detailed address information including file name + Sheet Name + Cell Location in the format: \[file name.xlsx]sheet name'!cell address. Where: red characters are fixed, bold black content you change accordingly to your report.

Step 4: Press Enter to view the result.

Note:
- Data linking does not automatically update if you do not open the source and destination files simultaneously. So when opening the destination file, Excel will prompt a data update warning, you click the Update button for Excel to automatically update data without opening the source file.
