Today, finding documents to aid in work has become incredibly easy thanks to the Internet. We can even download documents to our computers for convenient multiple uses. However, after downloading, many documents encounter font errors, displaying difficult-to-read characters. So, how can we fix font errors after downloading documents from the internet? Let's follow the guide below.
Reasons for Document Font Errors After Downloading
Currently, there are countless fonts created and shared on the internet. Document writers can choose any font they like. However, not every downloaded document will have those fonts readily available on the computer. In such cases, the computer cannot display the characters correctly in the document, especially those with accents, leading to font errors on the downloader's computer.
Fixing Font Issues
Now that we know the cause of font errors, you might immediately think of a solution: installing the original font from the document onto your computer, right? While this method is correct, if you already have Vietnamese typing support software like UniKey, you can use it to address this issue. Below, I'll guide you through both methods of fixing font errors:
Method 1: Downloading and Installing the Document's Original Font
Step 1: Open the document with font errors. Click anywhere in the text to determine the original font the document is using. In the example below, the font is VNI-Univer.

Step 2: Use a web browser to search and download the font to your computer.

Step 3: Right-click on the downloaded font file and select Install to install the font.

Review the document, and now the text is displayed correctly, without any font errors.

This method has the advantage of being simple and quick, especially for documents used for scientific purposes that typically only use basic fonts, which can be easily found immediately on the browser. However, there are two main disadvantages: one is that it may be difficult to determine all the original fonts when the document uses more than one font, and two, an Internet connection is required to perform this method. The second method will help you overcome these limitations.
Method 2: Switching to an Existing Font on the Computer
Instead of installing new fonts, we can convert the entire text to a font already available on the computer while still displaying the correct content. To do this, you need Vietnamese typing support software. In this guide, I'm using UniKey. This software is widely used by computer users in Vietnam, so I won't introduce it further; I'm sure your computer already has it.
With this method, you don't need to know the exact original font of the document, just the character set it belongs to. Currently, in Vietnam, there are three popular character sets used:
- TCVN3 character set (or ABC): includes a collection of fonts with names starting with .Vn, such as .VnTime, .VnArial, .VnAristote, etc.
- VNI Windows encoding: includes a collection of fonts with names starting with VNI-, such as VNI-Disney, VNI-Viettay, VNI-YAHOO, etc.
- Unicode encoding: the most common international standard character encoding today; fonts belonging to this encoding do not have a prefix in their names. For example: Arial, Times New Roman, Calibri, etc.
After understanding how to identify which encoding a font belongs to, make sure UniKey is running on your computer, then follow these steps:
Step 1: Check the name of the original font the document is using to identify the encoding. In the example below, the font is VNI-Univer, which corresponds to the VNI Windows encoding.

Step 2: Press the Ctrl + A key combination to select the entire text, switch to the new font you want, then copy it (you can also press the Ctrl + C key combination).

Step 3: Press the Ctrl + Shift + F6 key combination to open the UniKey Toolkit window.
1. In the Source section, select the encoding corresponding to the original font that is currently experiencing issues.
2. In the Destination section, select the encoding corresponding to the new font after conversion.
3. Click on Convert Encoding to proceed with the conversion.

A message Successfully converted RTF clipboard will appear. Click on OK.
Step 4: Paste the text again (you can press the Ctrl + V key combination), and the text will now apply the new font and no longer have font errors.

Through this article, I have guided you on how to fix font errors after downloading documents from the internet. I hope that from now on, font errors will no longer cause you trouble. Wish you success!
