How to Install and Use Unikey for Beginners

1. Installing Unikey

Step 1: Download Unikey from the official website https://www.unikey.org/download.html

It's advisable to select the latest version of Unikey and the version compatible with your operating system (32-bit or 64-bit). The current latest version is Unikey 4.3 RC4.

Step 2: After downloading, right-click on the compressed file and select Extract to unikey…. to extract the software.

Step 3: Open the folder containing Unikey and launch the Unikey typing tool. Then, click Close to minimize the typing tool to the system tray.

2. User Interface of Unikey

Step 1: Open Unikey and click on the Expand button to reveal additional options.

Step 2: The main interface of Unikey is more comprehensive with key sections such as:

Control (1): We can change the character set and typing method in this section. Typically, we use the Unicode character set with Telex typing method to type Vietnamese in text editors. Additionally, we can change the toggle key to temporarily disable the Vietnamese typing tool when typing in English. The default toggle key combination is Ctrl + Shift.

Other Options (2): This section allows users to set advanced options such as spell checking and restoration, allowing free typing...

Shortcut Typing Options (3): This section is very useful when we need to use long phrases but only need to type keywords as the typing tool will automatically convert them into shortcut phrases. For example: TTPM => TechTipsSoftware, VNVD => Vietnam Champion.

System (4): These options allow us to change the display language of Unikey and enable Unikey to start with Windows.

3. Guide to Typing Vietnamese with Unikey

Unikey supports basic typing methods such as Telex, VNI, VIQR, Microsoft, and the typing methods are as follows:

Telex Typing Method

Example: Tiếng Việt = Tieengs Vieetj

VNI Typing Method

Example: tie6ng1 Vie6t5 = tiếng Việt.

VIQR Typing Method

Example: tie^'ng Vie^.t = tiếng Việt.

Microsoft Typing Method

Example: Tiếng Việt = Ti38ng Vi39t.

4. Encoding Conversion with Unikey Toolkit
