Hanging a swag light or light fixture from your ceiling may seem daunting, but it’s actually quite simple. You just need a few basic tools and a little time to complete this project. If you own the property, you can install a light fixture directly into the ceiling. If you're renting or prefer a temporary solution, you can hang a swag light from a hook or anchor and plug it into an outlet.
Steps
Mounting a Light Fixture in the Ceiling

Turn off the circuit breaker that controls the light. Prior to any action, ensure to switch off the circuit breaker. If unsure about which breaker controls the light, turn off the main breaker and utilize natural light or a headlamp to proceed with the installation.

Detach the existing fixture, if necessary. Use a screwdriver to loosen the screws or an impact driver with a hex-shaft to remove the nuts holding the canopy (the dome-shaped cover) in place on the ceiling. Then, detach the crossbar from the electrical box by removing the securing screws. Disconnect the wires from the fixture by untwisting and removing the wire connectors. Lower the old fixture carefully to the ground.

Ensure the stability of your light fixture. According to Jeff Huynh, the general manager of Handyman Rescue Team: 'When removing your light fixture, inspect the metal or plastic box. Test the screws by shaking the box. If it feels loose, it needs replacement. For fixtures weighing up to approximately 15 lbs (6.8 kg), a secure box is sufficient. However, for heavier fixtures like chandeliers, you'll need to install a support beam in the ceiling rafters and hang the box and fixture from it.'

Assemble the mounting strap for the new fixture. Follow the provided instructions for the new fixture. Typically, align the crossbar with the back of the canopy and insert the pipe or screws through it. Ensure only 1⁄4 to 1⁄2 inch (0.64 to 1.27 cm) of the pipe extends past the canopy, and adjust as needed. Tighten the nuts to secure the screws or pipe in place.

Attach the crossbar to the electrical box. Have someone hold the fixture while you complete this step. Ensure all wires are on one side of the crossbar. Then, screw the crossbar onto the electrical box in the ceiling using a screwdriver. It should be positioned across the center of the hole and screwed in on both sides.

Connect the corresponding wires. Match the “hot” wire from the fixture with the “hot” wire from the ceiling, and similarly for the neutral wires. Typically, the hot wire is black or red, and the neutral wire is white. Use wire connectors to join the corresponding wires. Twist the exposed parts of the wires together, then secure the connector onto the wires.

Secure the ground wire around the ground screw. Locate the ground screw on the installed crossbar, usually situated just to one side of its center. Identify the ground wire, often green or copper. Wrap the ground wire clockwise around the ground screw to tighten it securely.

Install the canopy. Organize all wires and connectors into the electrical box. Then, use a screwdriver or impact driver to fasten the canopy to the ceiling. If needed, adjust the threaded rod or screws to ensure a snug fit of the canopy.

Insert the light bulbs and restore power. If needed, insert light bulbs into the fixture sockets, ensuring they match the fixture's specifications. Then, switch the circuit breaker back on to restore power.
Hanging a Swag Light from a Ceiling Hook

Purchase a swag light and cord kit. Seek out a “swag” light, designed to hang from the ceiling and plug into a wall outlet, eliminating the need for electrical work. The kit should include the light fixture, shade, cord with plug, and necessary anchors or hooks for installation.

Confirm the cord's reach to an outlet. Before installing hooks or anchors, assess the light's intended placement. Ensure the cord is long enough to reach an outlet when hung from the ceiling and run along the ceiling and down a wall corner. If not, consider an alternative location or use an extension cord.

Mount 2 ceiling hooks or a hook and anchor. For heavier lights exceeding 5 pounds (2.3 kg), opt for an anchor instead of a hook. Position the anchor or hook where the light will hang and secure it to the ceiling. Place the other hook in the corner of the room where the cord will run down to the outlet.

Suspend the light from the hook or anchor. Unwrap any packaging and screw the bulb into place, if needed. Attach the lampshade over the bulb and connect the cord, if applicable. Then, hang the cord from the hook or anchor you installed, positioning the lamp at your desired height.

Plug in the light, and optionally conceal the cords with cord covers. Once the light is hung, simply plug it in! For a neater appearance, consider using cord covers to hide the cords. These covers are plastic tubes that conceal and secure the cords. Insert the cord into the tube through the back slit, then peel off the adhesive backing and attach the cover to the wall or ceiling.
Tips
-
Alternatively, you could hang string lights from the ceiling to create both lighting and ambiance.
Warnings
- For homes wired before 1985, ensure that the light fixture you choose does not require electrical wire rated for 90 °C (194 °F).
- If your new light fixture weighs over 50 pounds (23 kg), you may need to replace the electrical box to support its weight.
- Do not modify aluminum wiring. If you have aluminum wiring, which is gray instead of copper, seek assistance from a certified electrician for this project.
