Typically, when installing an operating system, each version of Windows comes with its own exclusive desktop backgrounds, and Windows 8/8.1 is no exception. However, you can easily change your computer's desktop background with your favorite images or install interface themes.
Step-by-Step Guide to Installing Themes on Windows 8.1
Step 1: Download and install UltraUXThemePatcher on your computer. You can get the latest version of UltraUXThemePatcher here.
Double-click the UltraUXThemePatcher.exe file to install the program. Select Next to proceed.
Step 2: Choose I accept the terms of the License Agreement, then select Next to continue.
Step 3: Select I Agree to proceed.
Step 4: At this step, pay attention to area (1). If you receive the message '… un-supported', you'll need to install Take Ownership. Then select Next (2) to continue.
Step 5: Choose Finish to complete the installation process.
Guide to Taking Ownership of 3 Files in Step 4
The 3 files uxtheme.dll, themeui.dll, and uxinit.dll are used to modify the operating system's theme and are restricted by Microsoft. Therefore, we need to Take Ownership of these 3 files to gain permission for modification and access.
- Download Take Ownership from this link.
- Open the file AddTakeOwnershipOption.rar, double-click on Take Ownership - Install.reg.
- Select Yes to proceed.
- Choose OK to finish the installation process.
After installing Take Ownership, navigate to C:\Windows\System32 to take ownership of the following 3 files: uxtheme.dll, themeui.dll, uxinit.dll. Right-click on each file and select Take ownership.
Step 6: Now we can visit the themes deviantart website and select various themes.
Download the themes, then copy them into the folder C:\Windows\Resources\Themes (1) in the format of one folder + one file (2). Double-click directly on the .theme file to apply the new theme (in this case, teuilla_f.theme).
After double-clicking on the Teuilla_f.theme file, we will have the following interface.
Themes will be added to Personalize in Windows.
