DAV files are a type of encrypted video format commonly used by security video recorders, such as CCTV (closed circuit television) cameras. They cannot be accessed using standard media players, computers, or mobile devices, and are not editable with typical video editing software due to security measures. Despite the challenges, it is possible to open a DAV file.
Steps
Converting the DAV File
Get a DAV file converter. To view a DAV file, you will need to convert it into a readable format first. One popular converter for handling these types of videos is the Idea Share Video Go application, available for download at: http://www.idealshare.net/video-converter.html.
- You can either try the limited free trial version or purchase the full version for $29.99.
- It's recommended to experiment with the free trial initially to ensure compatibility with your DAV file. This way, you can avoid spending money on a product that may not meet your needs.
Complete the installation of the converter. Once the download is finished, double-click the file to initiate the Installation Wizard, which will guide you through the installation process on your computer.
Import the DAV file into the video converter. Double-click the shortcut icon of the converter on your desktop to launch it. Then, click the plus (+) icon within the application interface to open an Explorer window. Use this window to navigate to and select the DAV file you wish to convert.
- Click the “Open” button within the Explorer window to load the chosen DAV file into the converter application.
Begin the conversion process. Select your desired output format from the “Profile” drop-down menu within the converter interface.

Accessing the Converted File
Open the converted file. Click the “Open Folder” option on the Ideal Share interface, prompting another Explorer window to appear, displaying the location where the converted file has been saved.
Play the converted DAV file. Simply double-click the converted file, and your computer's default video player will automatically open, allowing you to watch the content of the DAV file.
