While the process of applying stick deodorant isn't complex, there's a right way to do it to avoid making a mess. Stick deodorant is widely used in the United States, but in other countries, sprays, gels, or even no deodorant are preferred. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), deodorant is classified as a cosmetic product designed to mask or eliminate body odor through fragrance.
Steps
Preparation
Cleanse your underarms. Prior to applying stick deodorant, it's essential to either shower or thoroughly cleanse your underarms to freshen up. Ensure your underarms are dry with a towel to facilitate smooth application of the deodorant without smudging.
Wait before getting dressed. Deodorant can leave streaks on clothes, so it's advisable to apply it under your armpits and then wait as long as possible before dressing. Putting it on just before wearing your shirt increases the likelihood of getting white marks on your clothing.
How to Apply Stick Deodorant
Unscrew or remove the deodorant cap. Like most cosmetic products, deodorant containers come with a tight cap that you need to unscrew or pull off.
Take off the plastic casing. Under the cap, there's often a special seal firmly covering the deodorant stick that needs to be removed before use. This seal helps keep the stick moist by preventing evaporation.
Twist the applicator wheel 2-3 times. After removing the cap, twist the wheel on the bottom of the deodorant stick 2 or 3 times to expose enough deodorant at the top. This ensures full coverage when applying.
Apply deodorant evenly to the underarm area. Apply the deodorant slowly and thoroughly, starting from the center of your armpit and moving outward in all directions until your underarm is fully covered. Reapply as needed throughout the day.
Secure the cap and store the deodorant properly. Leaving the cap off can cause the deodorant to dry out, rendering it unusable. Store your deodorant in an easily accessible place, such as inside the cabinet under your bathroom sink.
Tips
- Choose the stick deodorant brand and fragrance that suits you best. There are various options available, including scented, unscented, men’s, women’s, gel-based, powder-based, natural, and more.
- Avoid overusing deodorant, as heavy fragrances may be unpleasant for others. Consider using antiperspirant if you're planning on physical activity.
- Rotate deodorant brands regularly to prevent your body from becoming resistant to them, which can reduce effectiveness over time.
Warnings
- If you encounter discomfort or develop a rash, discontinue use of the deodorant and consult a dermatologist.
