Most phones save images captured with the front camera exactly as they appear in the preview. However, this means they don't accurately reflect reality. Raise your right hand and take a selfie, then look at the photo in your camera roll. Your right arm may appear on the left when it should be on the right. In many cases, this isn't an issue, but in others, it can be quite bothersome. So, how do you flip upside-down images on an Android phone?
1. Preventing the Android phone camera from capturing upside-down photos
When you use your phone to capture a selfie, the image you see is akin to looking in a mirror, hence the term 'mirror image.' Clearly, the easiest way is prevention, and here's how to stop images from being saved flipped. Many Android phones offer this feature, often hidden in the Settings menu. Some phones even give you the choice between saving images flipped or not when you take a photo.
To prevent the phone camera from capturing upside-down photos, follow these steps:
- Open the Camera app and look for Settings (could be an icon with gears, three dots, or the word 'Settings').
- Now, scroll down until you find an option like Mirrored photos (found on OnePlus 7 Pro),
Note that the image appears inverted on the screen when capturing a photo with the front camera, but the saved version will have the correct orientation. Additionally, this applies only to images captured after you've changed the settings, as all previous images have been saved.
2. How to Rotate Upside-Down Photos on Android Phones with Saved Images
If you want to flip an upside-down photo that has already been saved on your device back to a normal image, it's not difficult. You probably can't do this with the default photo viewer on the device, but this can be easily remedied with the Snapseed app. Here's how:
- Open the Snapseed app and select the photo you want to modify.
- Tap on Tools located at the bottom of the screen and select Rotate from the new menu that appears.
- At the bottom of the screen, you'll see an icon with 2 arrows pointing at each other. Tap on that icon to flip the upside-down photo.
- Tap the checkmark in the bottom right corner of the screen to save the changes.
* On the Samsung Galaxy S10, you can rotate the upside-down photo using the built-in Gallery app:
- Open the Gallery app and select the photo you want to edit.
- Tap on the pen icon at the bottom of the screen.
- Use the flip button or the rotate button to adjust your photo.
+ Press the flip button, resembling two parentheses separated by a vertical line, to flip the image.
+ Tap the rotate button with the circular arrow icon to rotate the image 90 degrees. Continue rotating until the image is back in the correct orientation.
If you have selfies with inverted text, you can quickly flip or rotate those images with a few simple steps as introduced in the article.
