Opening Skype on Chromebook
Currently, there are four Android apps—Vine, Evernote, Duolingo, and Sight Word—licensed by Google to run on Chromebook. To install other apps, users need to install one of these four apps. Then, the runtime environment will be activated, allowing users to sideload Android apps to run on Chrome OS. The same goes for Skype. Step 1: Activate the App Runtime Feature on Chrome
App Runtime for Chrome (Beta) is a project that allows you to run your favorite Android apps on ChromeBook. Google recognizes the demand of Chromebook users to use Android apps on Chromebook. That's why Google launched this project with the release of 4 Android apps that will work in Chrome OS.
To activate App Runtime, you need to install one of the 4 apps from the Play Store: Duolingo, Evernote, Sight Word, or Vine. When you install one of these apps, it will automatically add App Runtime for Chrome (Beta), which you can see in the extensions section.
Step 2: Download the Skype APK file to your device, you can download it here: Skype for Android.
Step 3: Open your Google Chrome browser, go to this link to install Twerk on Chromebook
Step 4: Create Skype extension
- Open Twerk
- Drag and drop the Skype Apk file you just downloaded
- Customize your preferences (phone or tablet, portrait or landscape, default size or larger).
- Click on the pink button with the Android icon and select your folder destination.
Step 5: Go to the Chrome extensions section (Alt + E > Tools > Extensions) and activate developer mode. Click on Load Unpacked Extension and load the Skype Apk file you created in the previous step.
Step 6: Launch Skype
You'll see the Skype extension loading, click Launch to open Skype
The Skype app will appear, simply log in with your Skype account to use Skype on Google Chromebook normally. If you don't have an account, you can sign up for Skype through the instructions provided.
