We're all familiar with the Windows 7, 8, or 10 notification sound whenever we plug or unplug a USB device. But occasionally, the sound plays even when you're not doing anything. This article will guide you on how to mute the notification sound on Windows 7, 8, and even 10 when connecting USB devices, ensuring you no longer have to endure this annoyance.
How to Mute Irritating USB Connection Sound on Windows
Method 1: Utilize Device Manager
This is the simplest and quickest method. If successful, you won't need to resort to third-party software.
As soon as you hear the USB connection sound, press the Start button, type Device manager, and then press Enter.
In the Device Manager window, expand the window to its fullest and view all devices connected to the USB ports of your computer (keyboard, mouse, Bluetooth, etc.).
Scan the list and pinpoint which device is causing the continuous connect/disconnect issue and triggering the notification sound.
Once you've identified the device, go to View => Show hidden devices to display it even when it's disconnected.
Right-click on the device and select Update Driver Software. If unsuccessful, right-click again and choose Uninstall, then reconnect the device to your computer.
Alternatively, you can disconnect all current USB devices. In Device Manager, click the downward arrow in the Universal Serial Bus controllers section. From this list, right-click on all devices with 'Host Controller' in their names and select Uninstall.
Restarting your computer will automatically reinstall USB controllers.
Method 2: Using USBDeview
If Method 1 fails to identify the cause, try this tool instead.
USBDeview helps you manage your USB devices: check connection status, driver creation time, and most importantly, the last time they connected/disconnected from the computer.
After installing USBDeview, launch the application and check the list of all USB devices on your computer.
By default, all devices will be displayed whether they are currently connected or not.
You should open this tool immediately when you hear the hidden USB notification sound. Click on the Last Plug/Unplug Date column, and the recently connected/disconnected device will appear at the top.
Disconnect the device directly through USBDeview by right-clicking and selecting Uninstall Selected Devices. Then, remove the device and plug it back into the computer.
Method 3: Disable USB Notification Sound
Most USB connection sounds are not indicative of any serious issues. Sometimes, they're just momentary glitches in drivers or power sources, which won't affect the functionality of your device.
If your device is still functioning normally despite continuous notification sounds, you can disable all USB notification sounds on your computer.
To do this, right-click on the speaker icon in the notification area on the far right of the taskbar. Choose Sounds, navigate to Program Events, scroll down to Device Connect, and click on it. In the drop-down menu under Sounds, switch from Windows Hardware Insert to (None).
Do the same with the Device Disconnect option.
