Learn how to toggle Enable Editing or Protected View mode when opening Word or Excel files. When you download Word or Excel files from the internet to your computer, Word, Excel typically requires you to turn off Protected View mode by clicking on Enable Editing in order to edit or print the document. Protected View mode is a feature of Office designed to mitigate the risk of virus infection when downloading files from the internet. However, if you frequently open multiple documents, you may consider disabling this feature to save time.
To completely disable the Enable Editing feature or Protected View mode, follow the instructions below:
Go to the File menu on the toolbar
Select Options
Next, click on Trust Center
The screen will switch as shown below, then continue to click on Trust Center Settings… on the right side of the screen.
The Trust Center dialog box appears, then select Protected View. Here, you uncheck all settings as shown in the image below, then press Ok.
Finally, you just need to reopen your file without worrying about the hassle of Enable Editing anymore.
