With the new Photos app on Mac, you'll need to use the Option key when opening the app to make it easier to move your iPhoto image library into the Photos app on Mac.
Moving the iPhoto image library into the Photos app on Mac
Step 1: Close both the Photos and iPhoto apps if they're currently open.
Step 2: Reopen the Photos app while simultaneously holding down the Options key until the Choose Library window appears, then choose one of the following options:
- If you see your iPhoto photo library in the list, simply select the iPhoto library and click Choose Library to open the photos in the Photos app.
- Alternatively, select Other Library and navigate to the location of the iPhoto photo library you want to move into the Photos app, then open the photos as usual.
Step 3: Allow the Photos app to import photos from the iPhoto library. Immediately, photos from the iPhoto library will appear in the Photos app, though for large photo libraries or libraries stored on external hard drives, the import process may take a little longer.
If you already have a Photos library, you'll now be dealing with two separate photo libraries, which is why it's best to move the iPhoto photo library (or Aperture photo library) into the Photos app on Mac during the first app launch.
If you want to merge two different photo libraries, there's no direct way to merge the iPhoto photo library with the Photos library other than manually importing photos. To do this, you can access File =>Import or drag and drop photos from one library to another using the file system.
With older versions of Mac OS X, merging photo libraries together could be considered a useful feature. However, since the update to OS X Yosemite, Apple has replaced the old iPhoto app with the new Photos app, so you need to move the iPhoto photo library into the Photos app on Mac if you want to store your photo data on your Mac computer.
