A simple guide on trimming and shaping yew bushes to maintain their health
Yew bushes, known for their longevity, come in various types. Opting for targeted trimming promotes the health of the bushes, requiring the selection of specific branches for cutting. Look for branches that protrude or obstruct sunlight to the rest of the plant. You can also shape yew bushes by trimming them to your desired form—just ensure the entire yew receives sufficient sunlight and air.
Steps
Selective Trimming of Yew Bushes
Commence trimming yew bushes in late March or early April. This is just before new growth begins. If the bushes are growing vigorously, consider trimming them again in late June.
- Avoid trimming yew bushes in autumn, as this will increase their susceptibility to winter conditions.
Inspect the yew and remove any diseased, dead, or broken branches. Identify branches with brown or dying leaves and trim them using hand pruners. For branches entirely yellow or brown, clip them off entirely.
Neaten the appearance of the yew by trimming any protruding shoots. These shoots, often light green, can be clipped using hand pruners. Ensure a uniform look by either cutting the ends level with the plant or trimming at the junction of two branches.
Enhance sunlight penetration within the yew by selectively removing branches. Utilize hand pruners to cut longer shoots deep within the shrub, opening up the center for improved air circulation and light exposure.
When cutting branches, always make the cut at the point where it meets another branch. Locate the attachment point and ensure a flush cut using hand pruners. For hard-to-reach branches, consider using long-handled pruners.
Achieve a polished look by shearing the yews.
Shape the yews to your desired form using a chainsaw. Exercise caution and proceed slowly to avoid overcutting. Remember not to remove more than 50 percent of the plant.
Select a shape that promotes sunlight and air circulation throughout the entire plant. Opting for a pyramid or similar shape enhances the overall health of the yews.
Maintain the yew's shape with pruning shears. Trim any new growth that extends beyond the desired shape. You can either level the growth with the rest of the plant or create air pockets by removing entire sections of branches.
