By default, laptops prioritize wired internet connections over wireless ones. However, if your laptop fails to recognize wired networks for some reason, and you're clueless, especially if you're not tech-savvy, refer to the article below for solutions to fix laptop wired network recognition issues that you can handle yourself.
How to troubleshoot laptop wired network recognition issue
1. Check network status
- If your computer is connected to a wired network but the network status icon in the system tray at the bottom right of the screen shows a red X, it means the computer has not yet established a connection or has not been activated. You need to check the Local Area Connection icon; if it's grayed out or says Disabled, it means the wired network connection is not activated. Right-click on it, then select Enable. After a few seconds, the icon will light up.
- Next, check if the network cable is broken or disconnected. Check the cable connecting your computer to the router for good contact; specifically, unplug the network cable and plug it into another port on the Router. If the computer successfully connects to the wired network, it means one of the Router ports is faulty. If changing the network port on the Router doesn't solve the problem, try using a different network cable.
- If the network icon displays a yellow exclamation mark, it means the network is not properly connected. To fix this issue, please refer to our previous guide on fixing the yellow exclamation mark network error that we shared earlier.
2. Check network card drivers
In many cases, users reinstall the operating system but forget to install necessary computer drivers, especially network card drivers.
Step 1: Press the Windows key + R key combination and enter the command devmgmt.msc in the Run dialog box, then press Enter or OK
Step 2: Double-click on Network adapters, make sure the driver is still functioning normally (no yellow exclamation mark). If there's a yellow exclamation mark, download the correct network card driver corresponding to the device code and reinstall it.
If you have installed the correct driver, then check if your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is working properly and whether you need to set up a broadband connection (PPPoE). You can follow the steps below to establish a broadband connection:
Step 1: On the user interface, press the Windows key on your keyboard and type control panel, then click on the corresponding result.
Step 2: The Control Panel window will open, click on View network status and tasks as shown below.
Step 3: Next, click on Set up a new connection or network
Step 4: Double-click on the option Connect to the Internet afterwards
Step 5: Click on Broadband (PPPoE)
Step 6: Enter the User name and Password provided by your ISP, then click Connect
Here are the basic steps for you to quickly fix your laptop's network cable recognition issue. Furthermore, for laptop users, various issues may arise during usage, such as the USB recognition problem, causing headaches for many.
