Mastering Superscripts in Word 2019
To incorporate superscripts in Word 2019, follow any of the methods outlined below.
Method 1: Superscripting for Word 2007 and Beyond
This method offers the quickest way to apply it with Word 2010, 2013, 2016, and 2019 versions in use.
To superscript, input the content with the index, then highlight the index -> press the Home tab -> locate the X2 icon as described in the image below. After that, you will have the index you need.
To subscript, highlight the desired subscript -> then click on the Home tab -> click on the X2 icon as described below -> The result is the desired subscript.
Method 2: Using Shortcut to Create Exponents
- To write a superscript, for example, X2 => You just need to use the shortcut Ctrl + Shift + =
To write subscripts, for example like: H2O => Just press the shortcut Ctrl + =
To return to normal typing mode, simply press the shortcut used again once.
Method 3: Creating subscripts using custom Font

To start, input the formula or calculation containing the desired exponent as you would in a regular text editor.
Next, highlight the exponent you wish to create - right-click and select Font.
In the Font dialog, locate Effects -> check Superscript -> press OK. As a result, the exponent will be generated within the content. Repeat for additional exponents if needed.
To write a subscript
Similar to writing superscripts, you write content containing subscripts -> then highlight the subscript -> right-click and choose Font.
In the Font tab, navigate to the Effects section -> check the Subscript option.
You perform similar actions to write the remaining subscripts.
