1. Pha Din Pass
One of the four great mountain passes in the Northwest, Pha Din Pass is a pass whose name originates from the Thai language. The name Pha Din, where Pha means 'heaven,' and Din means 'earth,' implies that this place is the meeting point between heaven and earth. Legend has it that in the past, people from Lai Chau and Son La provinces determined their border by horse racing over Pha Din Pass. The horses and riders from Lai Chau were slightly faster, so the pass belongs to Lai Chau (now Dien Bien) and is a bit longer on the Lai Chau side than the Son La side.
Pha Din Pass stretches for an impressive 32 km and is located on National Highway 6 from Hanoi to Dien Bien. It is considered the most challenging pass in Vietnam, a place where heaven meets earth.
Pha Din Pass has a treacherous terrain, sandwiched between towering cliffs on one side and a deep, enticing abyss on the other. 2. Dien Bien Phu Victory Museum
Dien Bien Phu Victory Museum is a monument commemorating the 60th anniversary of the historic victory of Dien Bien Phu, inaugurated on May 5, 2014. The museum is designed in the shape of a truncated cone, with the surrounding decoration shaped like the camouflage net of Uncle Ho's military hat. Particularly, the entire interior of the second floor of the museum is designed as a circular mural, an important item in the exhibition content of the museum, and the first circular mural created in Vietnam.
The mural will vividly recreate the battlefield of Dien Bien Phu in the past. The museum is displaying nearly 1000 documents, artifacts, images, contributing to vividly and clearly reenact the anti-French colonial campaign of our army and people, mainly the images of digging mountains day and night, sleeping in bunkers, enduring rain, and the historic Dien Bien Phu campaign, leaving everyone who visits deeply moved and reflective.


3. Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument Area
Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument Area comprises the museum and monument of Dien Bien Phu victory, hills A1, C1, C2, D1; A1 hill martyrs' cemetery; Mường Thanh bridge and airport; Hong Cum and Him Lam strongholds; command post of Dien Bien Phu campaign, and more. Visiting this historical site is like stepping back into the heroic years of the war against the French to save the country.
The ensemble of Dien Bien Phu victory monument consists of three military units standing back to back, lifting a Thai baby, and the top displays the flag of determination to fight and win. The statue is 16.6m tall, made of bronze with a reinforced concrete and steel structure, weighing 220 tons. The statue's pedestal, 3.6m high, has a structure of reinforced concrete and steel, covered with artistic stone, composed of three rectangular layers stacked diagonally. When you climb up to the statue, you can also admire the entire city of Dien Bien, as the statue is placed on D1 hill.
The A1 hill martyrs' cemetery has 644 graves of courageous soldiers who sacrificed in the Dien Bien Phu campaign, mostly unknown graves, with only 4 named hero graves: To Vinh Dien, Phan Dinh Giot, Be Van Dan, Tran Can. The cemetery space is very quiet, with fresh air, a green, clean, and beautiful environment. The command bunker of General De Castries is located in the center of the Dien Bien Phu stronghold, in Mường Thanh field, Dien Bien district, Dien Bien province. The structure and arrangement of the bunker are still preserved without changes. Around the bunker is a defensive fence with a dense system of barbed wire and four tanks. The De Castries bunker is 20m long and 8m wide, including four rooms for living and working.


4. Pa Khoang Lake
Pa Khoang Lake is located in Muong Phang commune, Dien Bien district, Dien Bien province. The tourist area of Pa Khoang Lake covers a total area of 2,400ha, including 1,320ha of forest, 600ha of lake water, with a capacity of 37.2 million m3 of water. Pa Khoang Lake lies in the midst of a majestic natural landscape, hidden beneath the endless sky. With lush vegetation, the surrounding forest, and blooming orchid gardens, it is ideal for relaxation. If you prefer a mystical scene, visit in winter when the fog blankets the lake, creating a dreamy landscape.
In summer, the air here is pleasant with cool southern breezes. 5. Mường Thanh Valley
Mường Thanh Valley in Dien Bien district, Lai Chau province, stretches approximately 23 km in length and averages 7 km to 9 km in width. When visiting Dien Bien, travelers will be amazed by the natural scenery and the richness of Mường Thanh Valley, covering over 140 km2 - one of the vast rice fields nestled amidst expansive valleys from Nghia Lo to Dien Bien, ranked by the Thai people as 'first Thanh, second Lo, third Than, fourth Tac.'
Not only renowned for its vast expanse and favorable farming conditions, Mường Thanh Valley also provides life with exceptional and delicious pearls, especially the famous Dien Bien rice brand. 7. Pa Thơm Cave
Pa Thơm Cave, also known as Fairy Flower Cave, is a karst cave nestled in the limestone mountains of Pa Thơm commune, Dien Bien district, Dien Bien province.
Located 30 km from the city center, Pa Thơm Cave is situated halfway up the mountain and renowned as a beautiful cave, referred to by the locals as the 'cave with many fairy flowers.' Sitting at an altitude of over 1,500 m above sea level, Pa Thơm Cave is surrounded by dense primary forests with a diverse and abundant ecosystem. To reach the cave entrance, visitors must hike a steep path of over 200 meters, traversing rocky terrain with various climbing aids.
Along this path, visitors will enjoy the picturesque scenery of majestic mountains, glimpse at distant stilt houses on the mountain slopes of ethnic minorities, and hear the melodious songs of birds and the murmur of flowing streams. At the end of the trail, visitors will encounter a colossal rock formation resembling the head of a bowing elephant. The cave features nine large and small chambers adorned with numerous stalactites in vivid and enchanting shapes. On the walls, stalactite blocks resemble flowing waterfalls, shimmering and glistening. Pa Thơm Cave was designated a National Heritage site in 2009.

8. Historical Site - Đờ Cát Bunker
During the journey to Dien Bien Phu, visitors will have the opportunity to visit the historical site of Đờ Cát Bunker. The command bunker of General Đờ Cát is located in the central command group of Dien Bien Phu, in the Mường Thanh field, Dien Bien district, Dien Bien province. Despite nearly 60 years having passed, the structure and arrangement of the bunker are still preserved in their original state.
Đờ Cát Bunker, designed by the French colonialists, is robust, measuring 20m in length and 8m in width, consisting of four chambers for living and working. The bunker is surrounded by a defensive fence with a dense system of barbed wire and four tanks.
Đờ Cát Bunker stands as a testament to the heroic history of the people. Countless blood, bones, and tears were shed by our soldiers and people to achieve the moment when the red flag with a yellow star flew proudly over the bunker. It contributed to the glorious victories in the later years and led to the reunification of the country in the spring of 1975.

10. Northwest Flower Garden
Located about 18 km from the center of Dien Bien Phu, Northwest Flower Garden covers an area of over 3 hectares. It is meticulously designed, landscaped, and invested in planting and caring for various flowers to serve the appreciation, experience, and exploration needs of locals and tourists. 11. Bản Phủ Citadel - Hoang Cong Chat Temple
The historical site of Bản Phủ Citadel in Dien Bien Province was built from 1758 to 1762. The citadel has become an attractive tourist destination, attracting many tourists from both inside and outside Dien Bien Province. The citadel is a historical landmark of the campaign to repel foreign invaders and liberate Mường Thanh led by General Hoang Cong Chat in the 18th century.
Today, although it no longer has the grandeur of the past, the historical site of Bản Phủ Citadel is preserved with a section of the city wall for visitors to imagine the majestic ancient fortress, a military architectural structure guarding the border area. Standing on the citadel's lookout, tourists can admire the panoramic view of the entire region with low stilt houses faintly visible behind green bamboo groves and vast fields. This is a place for visitors to offer incense, express reverence, and sincerely pray for peace and good fortune.


12. Xá Nhè Cave
Located at the foot of a towering cliff, approximately 1km from the center of Sang Nhe commune, Xa Nhe Cave stretches 700m and consists of 5 different large and small chambers. Each chamber possesses a uniquely mysterious beauty. The outer chamber features an arched vault, and on the cave ceiling, stalactites cascade down, glittering with lines that are at times soft and flowing like a waterfall, while other times sharp and coral-like. Each stalactite resembles flowing cascades with countless sparkling crystalline formations. Below the cave floor lies stone coral reefs and diverse rock formations with various strange shapes.
The overall view of the outer chamber resembles a gigantic oil painting depicting the pristine natural landscape. Xa Nhe Cave is set within a stunning and majestic natural panorama. The deep gray color of the rocky mountains blends with the green of the forest and the yellow of ripening rice fields during the season. Although the cave is relatively close to the center of Sang Nhe commune, there is not much concentrated population around the cave. The mountains, trees, and grass still maintain their natural beauty, providing visitors with a sense of exploring a fascinating and untouched place.


13. Pê Răng Ky Cave
Pê Răng Ky Cave is situated at an altitude of over 1,000m above sea level. The cave, extending over 800m, hides beneath the cliff, amidst a majestic mountainous region, creating a picturesque landscape with layers of mountains resembling thousands of resting elephants. The cave consists of 3 chambers (vaults) with various large and small entrances, each displaying a mysterious beauty that leaves a strong impression and emotion on visitors. Standing beneath the cave, one feels like being in the midst of an ancient and grand castle, with monumental and romantic, dreamy architectural features.
Visitors not only admire the beauty of the cave but also explore the charming, untouched scenery of the Tả Phìn stone plateau, witnessing the terraced fields stretching, the majestic mountain ranges, and participating in the famous Tủa Chùa highland market. Uva is blessed with natural hot mineral water, discovered and exploited by the French since the 1950s. From a bird's eye view, the tourist area blends into the beautiful and pristine natural landscape of the Northwest. Facing Lake Uva, the tourist area welcomes refreshing breezes and leans against the mountain, creating a solid and tranquil setting.
Currently, the Uva Hot Mineral Tourism Area caters to visitors with various enticing services such as hot mineral baths, Dao đỏ medicinal baths, accommodation and dining services, relaxing fishing services, and more. The fresh air makes it an ideal place for fishing and enjoying the scenery, turning Lake Uva into an attractive destination for tourists and locals in Dien Bien.
Visitors can also indulge in traditional dishes, cultural exchanges with the local Thai ethnic people, immerse themselves in the local wine, and enjoy the lively atmosphere of traditional dances and markets.

15. Tham Vang Cave
Tham Vang Cave in Co Hom Village boasts natural beauty and wilderness with its wide and deep cavern, reaching nearly 100m in height and featuring numerous chambers. The cave has large, flat stone slabs resembling tables. Looking at the walls and ceiling, various rock formations, stone curtains, and stalactites create stunning shapes like dragons, phoenixes, lions, elephants, or exquisite orchids.
Tham Vang is a cave in the limestone mountain range, with an entrance in the middle of the mountain, selected as the main entrance. It descends deep into the ground, winding through dangerous crevices and narrow passages, eventually connecting to the Nậm Húa stream flowing through fields and villages such as Chieng Xom, Pha Hun, Mon Ha, and Chieng Lao.
According to the local Thai language, Tham means 'cave,' and Báng or Váng means 'abandoned.' In ancient times, when couples faced marital difficulties or had tasteless meals, the husband would abandon the wife in the forest, using Tham Vang Cave as a place to vent their frustrations. Hence, the name was chosen to reflect the meaning of couples parting ways. Due to its negative connotation and difficult access, local residents rarely visit the cave, fearing misunderstandings about abandoned households. Despite being a beautiful cave, Tham Vang is also an archaeological site of value for studying prehistoric people who once inhabited the area.
