New Content in Free Fire OB42
Snow Map
To welcome the winter of 2023, Garena has covered the Military Island area with snow, and Survival mode enthusiasts will surely notice this as soon as they enter the game. These updates include:
New Map Appearance- Snow Cover: Snow blankets the entire map, from grass, rooftops,... (except tropical trees); Rooftops (especially the Sky Towers) are covered in snow, with light snowfall but no visibility reduction.
- Frozen Lake: This is what gamers love the most because the water surfaces of areas like Coconut Island, Rim Nam Village, Power Plant,... will freeze. Free Fire players can drive or run across these frozen lakes without worrying too much about their path. But be careful not to jump recklessly because characters will take damage upon touching the ice.
- Sky Towers: This area has undergone significant and noteworthy changes. Specifically, the roofs of villas are now significantly sunken. Additional secret areas, requiring ladders to access. Water, vehicles are found in the pool and garage (instead of being empty). There's a maze system for players to explore.
- Base Camp: While not as extensively modified as the Sky Towers, it directly impacts the outcome of Battle Royale and Survival. Adjusted the positions of two containers (the middle one shifted), moved the ladder in the adjacent room closer to the wall.
New Characters and Character Adjustments
Ignis and the Power of 'Vertical Smoke Bombs'
Ignis is the new character introduced in this update. If Free Fire players have accompanied and participated in the trial version before OB42 was released, you will receive Ignis completely free through some basic missions. This character has the following skill set:
New Characters in Free Fire OB42Ignis [Active]: Creates a wall of fire lasting 8 seconds. Enemies touching it will take 30 DMG and 10 DMG/sec afterward, while also losing 10% armor. Burning effect lasts for 2s. Sticky Bombs will take 200 DMG and 200 DMG/sec afterward.
According to Mytour's assessment, this character offers a highly engaging gameplay. He serves as the nemesis of many current meta characters like Nairi, Monkey King, Antonio, etc. Ignis' tactics also keep enemies on their toes, effectively acting as a free smoke bomb for Free Fire gamers.
Adjustments to the Eagle Support
In OB42, the Eagle Support has been significantly nerfed. This nerf is deemed essential by Garena as it will encourage the use of other supports more than the previous meta of 'having an eagle means being on top.' The adjustments include:
Eagle Support Nerfed- Removed quick ground landing mechanism
- Introduced new mechanism: Disables enemy auto-targeting when the owner is skydiving
Overall, Garena's decision to nerf the 'sky dive into the ground' mechanic will reduce the Eagle's utility in the game as it's only useful in the early stages or when players are respawned. We can expect more diverse VFL matches now that other support characters will be utilized instead of each team having an Eagle as before.

Character adjustments, severe nerfs to the 'tanky' meta
- Sonia (nerf): Reduced shield from 150 to 100 after immunity
- Nairi (nerf): Reduced healing from 250 to 150 per second from adhesive bomb
- Thiva (nerf): Skill cooldown increased from 60s to 90s
- Dimitri (nerf): Skill cooldown increased from 60s to 90s
- Orion (nerf): Reduced lifesteal from 15HP to 10HP
- A124 (adjustment): Duration of effect reduced from 30s to 20s. Skill cooldown reduced from 75s to 50s
- Sun Wukong (buff): Reduced movement speed from 10% to 5%
- Iris (buff): Maximum marking effect increased from 3 to 5 adhesive bombs
Additionally, there are other optimizations such as: A124 & Skyler's skills can be canceled while aiming. Tatsuya's gliding skill can be used while sitting. Active skills can be used while jumping. Nikita, Joseph, Jai have completely new mechanics. And various adjustments to effects, descriptions, and more.
Weapon adjustments in OB42
In addition to characters, supports, and maps, weapon adjustments are also a major concern for players as they determine which weapons to use in Free Fire battles. Important weapons for players are heavily nerfed:
Some weapons receive nerfs- XM8 (buff): Bullet range increased by 20%, accuracy boosted by 20%, damage increased by 10%
- M249 (X) (buff): Damage while sitting increased by 100% (sitting increases damage by 10 points). Minimum damage while sitting increased by 20%
- M1014 (nerf): Minimum damage reduced by 15% (applies to all, regardless of whether chip is equipped)
- RGS50 (nerf): Player damage reduced by 25%
Close-range weapons undergo significant nerfs to bring balance to the Free Fire shooting environment. But the most lamentable is the RGS50, which was already weak and now suffers a 25% damage reduction. Players equipped with Yeti armor, explosive-resistant gear, may only take 15 damage from this feeble bazooka.

The Coin Forge can be considered the focal point of Free Fire's OB42 update, where players must bid farewell to their hard-earned coins to revive teammates or risk losing them to others. Garena has added the following mechanisms:
- Coin Forge: Appears fixed on the map, touching it grants 200 FF Coins to the whole team. Teammates cannot reuse it, but enemies can.
- Receive 100 coins after defeating enemies
- Adjusted dropped coins: You only leave 40% of coins in the loot box after being defeated. When revived, you retain 30% of coins but not exceeding 300 FF Coins.
In addition to the Coin Forge, Free Fire players should particularly note the following major changes:
- Standing outside the zone may reduce healing time by up to 30%, effects may be removed after 5 seconds outside the zone.
- The zone can move similarly to Battle Royale, only in 4-player team mode.
- Coins do not appear in Item Stations.
- Electric Gun, Healing Lazer, Pan removed from free item pool. Free Med Kit replaced with Healing Mask.
- Revive Cards do not appear in vending machines. SKS in vending machines replaced with MP5 - II.
- Removed hot air balloon, info box, armor upgrade box, 100 coin stack, 300 coin stack.
Regarding items in Survival, Garena has added a plethora of items in Free Fire such as: Equipment, Active Skill Cards, Teleportation Gate, Boosted Mask, Mini Cannon Tower, Healing UAV, Sticky Bombs Accessories, ... You can learn more through Free Fire's official YouTube channel.
Super Battlefield Mode
The Battle Royale mode doesn't seem to have undergone many changes in the OB42 version, instead we have the Super Battlefield mode opening on 1/12/2023. Specifically, there are some notable rules as follows:
Introducing the Super Battlefield Mode- You can play this mode in the Special Ranked Survival Mode, and you can receive two protections
- Before entering the match, you will be able to choose your own combat styles. A total of three styles: Flash God, Explosive Expert, Defensive King.

- The type of Supreme Warriors will have a special knockout notification. Higher-ranked types help receive more Battle Coins.

General evaluation of OB42 in Free Fire
According to Mytour's evaluation, this new mode is truly exciting and fresh for Survival enthusiasts, especially with the usual Military Island map, as Free Fire has been paying very close attention to the experience and gunfight dynamics of regular players and professional esports athletes.
